PEER MENTORING
PEER MENTORING
One effort to reach one of our group’s intended purposes is the establishment of the UMSCAS Peer Mentoring program. Peer Mentoring is a program designed to match students with upper level or graduate students to provide support on a small-scale, peer-to-peer level. First and second years will have the opportunity to be matched with a third or fourth year general, advanced, and/or honours sociology or criminology student. Third year to final year students will have the opportunity to be matched as a mentor with a younger student and be the mentee of a graduate student or alumni.
The UMSCAS Peer Mentoring program is a program designed to foster peer-relationships between mentors and mentees and enhance the Soc/Crim department camaraderie. Soc and Crim students will have the opportunity to be mentored 1-1 within a public setting, and/or as a group.
Mentor Eligibility
To become a mentor, you must meet all of the following criteria:
Be enrolled in a Sociology or Criminology program at the general, advanced, honours, or graduate level
Have declared Sociology or Criminology as your major or minor
Be in your third year of study or beyond
Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
Mentee Eligibility
You are eligible to be a mentee if you:
Are currently enrolled in at least one Sociology or Criminology course
Have an interest in pursuing further studies in either Sociology or Criminology
We will do our best to match mentors with mentees who have similar preferences. For example, a mentee who whould prefer to be in one-on-one mentoring rather than a group will be matched with a mentor who would prefer to mentor one-on-one. Additionally, a mntee whoe needs help understanding sociological theories will be macthed with someone who describes theory as a strength in the registration form.
If a Mentor or Mentee has violated UMSCAS, University of Manitoba, Faculty of Arts or UMSU policy - academic honest, AI, Safe and Healthy Learning Environment, Sexual Harassment etc. There will be an immediate dismissal from the program and possible referral to the head of the Department of Sociology and Criminology
Mentors and Mentees will meet in-person twice a month for 30-60 minutes at a time. UMSCAS will facilitate one meeting a month where Peer Mentoring groups or one-on-one mentors can meet in the same location at the same time. The other monthly meeting will be the responsibility of the Mentor to schedule and ensure attendance. All mentoring sessions should take place in public - whether at the ASBC lounge or library and the location can be moved with consent of both the mentor and mentee, and with notification of an UMSCAS executive.
