What We Do

Student Workshops:

The AHW invites graduate students from all levels to present and discuss seminar papers, dissertation chapters, conference papers and other written works. Our collaborative environment prepares members for further research, conference presentation and publication. Papers are circulated in advance.

Book Workshops:

Members will read and discuss a recently published academic book. The author of the selected book is usually invited to participate, offering Michigan graduate students the opportunity to engage with an elite scholar in the field in an informal setting.

Special Events:

Many of our senior graduate students, faculty contributors and guest scholars address one of the most important issues facing graduate students: professionalization. Students are able to engage in frank conversation about the challenges facing graduate students as they transition to professional life both inside and outside of the academy.

Each Spring, the AHW co-sponsors the Graduate Student Conference in Modern American History. Graduate students from institutions across the country are invited to present their research. These conferences offer important opportunities for graduate students to gain experience in presenting, giving scholarly comments, and networking in a low-stakes environment.

The AHW is one of Rackham Graduate School's Interdisciplinary Workshops.
