本研究グループでは、（a）海洋観測、（b）観測データの高い再現性を実現する海洋モデル、データ同化、（c）海洋氷床結合モデル開発によって、過去・現在・未来の南極海の理解を深め、海洋温暖化と南極の氷損失/海面上昇へ影響を与える要因を明らかにすることを目的に研究を進めています。2019年に設立され、現在、博士課程1名、修士課程3名の学生が在籍しています。本研究室へは、環境科学研究科の大気海洋・気候力学コースから所属することができます。

南極の氷は、海面上昇に寄与する氷を失っています。また、その量的損失は加速し、かつてないほどに、南極の寄与によって海面が上昇する可能性もあります。さらに、過去10年間で、南極海、特に氷に覆われた大陸棚域の観測が急速に進みました。観測データが豊富になり、新しい知見を発見できる準備が整ってきた、今、地球規模に重要な南極について、南極域の研究が急速に進んでいます。

研究活動に加えて、ソーシャルメディアやアウトリーチ活動（例：南極キャンドルワークショップ）も積極的に行っています（詳細はOpportunitiesに記載）。
