One of the purposes of this site is to suggest that engagement with public art is not just limited to those that are physically present to the art. The visible community that UMDs public art serves is UMD staff, students, faculty, and visitors. However, the underlying intended community is broader. UMD's public art is for everyone; whether they be on campus or online.
The predecessor to this site was a map tracking past and present art spaces on UMD's campus. The map was created by Abby Eron, an American Art PhD Candidate at UMD, College Park. The novel development of this map was the foundation for a catalogue including all on campus art. Picking up where the map left off, a semester long collaborative project between the Michelle Smith Collaboratory for Visual Culture and UMD's School of Arts and Humanities Undergraduate Technology Apprenticeship Program was formed. From this project came the UMD Public Art website. Since the sites creation, various members of the UMD community have made additions to its content.
when the collection of information took place. Due to some unprecedented circumstances, the developers of this site were unable to physically capture and catalogue the entirety of the Public art on University of Maryland's campus. However this site includes the vast majority of Public Art works on UMD, College Park's campus at the present moment.
