Dr. Rochelle Newman runs both the Language Development and Perception Laboratory and the Canine Perception Laboratory on campus. During her visit to our NSSLHA meeting, she amazed us with her work and helped show the need for this current research. To top it all off, she even showed us dog videos! We truly appreciate the time she spent speaking to us and can't wait to get involved with her labs. Check out our meeting minutes here!
We rotated around to different guest speakers who shared about various assistive listening technologies that are used in the field by both audiologists and SLP's, and even how to get certified as a assistive technology professional!
Our first holiday toy drive, benefitting the kids at our partner Jacob's Promise, was a success! Pictured are some of the great toys the kids will get to enjoy. A huge thank you to everyone who donated!
The event featured Jennifer Lightfoot, AuD, CCC-A, FAAA and Tara Forkey, MS, CCC-SLP from the Kendall Elementary School at Gallaudet University; Kelly King, AuD, PhD from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD); and Dana Kilonsky, MA, CCC-SLP from Johns Hopkins Hospital. The panelists focused on the working relationship between speech-language pathologists and audiologists, the roles and responsibilities of healthcare professionals on an interprofessional healthcare team, the barriers to interprofessional practice in their respective settings, and how patients and their families benefit from this collaborative approach.
NSSLHA got involved with Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN), a group with the mission of empowering youth with disabilities by providing free, non-competitive one-to-one programs of exercise, fitness, and fun, led by volunteer coaches. A few of our members had a wonderful time volunteering!
"Aphasia” is the true story of actor Carl McIntyre who, after suffering a massive stroke and losing his ability to read, write, and talk, struggles against overwhelming odds to redefine his life.
Carl McIntyre was able to come to the University of Maryland for the movie screening, a live talk, and a meet & greet. NSSLHA had the pleasure of co-hosting this event. We had a great turn out, and really enjoyed hosting this event! Thanks to everyone from the community and campus who came out to this wonderful event! Also, a big special thank you to everyone that helped make this event possible!
