The Program

Overview

National

In 1996, the Clinton Administration began the America Reads Challenge initiative to ensure that more children were able to read independently by the end of third grade.

Congress approved the use of federal work-study funds to support tutoring by college and university students. The initial focus of the America Reads Challenge was to support students in grades K - 3rd, but since inception the program has expanded to include grades 4th - 8th and the subject of math as well.

The America Reads America Counts program is currently being implemented in over 1,000 colleges and universities throughout the United States.

At The University of Montana

Program Goal:

Our goal is to increase the math and literacy achievement of K-8th grade students in the Missoula area.

Program Commitment:

The University of Montana is committed to supporting Missoula students to become more proficient in reading and mathematics through the America Reads America Counts Tutor Program. America Reads America Counts is a federally funded work-study program that trains university students to work in local elementary and middle schools, and nonprofit organizations. It is offered at no cost to the school district.

Program Achievement:

This year, UM placed 7 work-study tutors in over 20 classrooms and after-school programs in elementary and middle schools, and nonprofit organizations. Tutors perform one-on-one work with individual students, group work, and class activities.

Tutors approach learning in an innovative way, focusing on the unique needs of each student.

Here's what teachers say about the program:

“I couldn't be more pleased with our America Reads and Counts tutors! They have been professional, kind, reliable, and punctual! Both have been very open to whatever activities we have had ready for them. They have just been great!!”

“Our America Reads and Counts tutor has been wonderful to have in the classroom! I wish I had her more days per week.”
