How It Works

The Program:

The America Reads America Counts Program is a work-study opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the university. It is a Federal Financial Aid program that is fully subsidized by the government. This means that tutors' wages are paid 100% through financial aid.

Tutors are available to teachers and after-school programs working with K-8 students at NO COST.

Principals, teachers, and program directors work together to match teachers' needs with tutors' specialties and schedules. Tutors can work up to 19 hrs/wk. They may work through the summer if there is an available opportunity.

Tutors work in the areas of mathematics and reading and can serve students K-8.

Public Schools and Nonprofit Organizations

To get started, teachers and supervisors must submit a Tutor Request Form to specify the days, times, and subjects for which they wish to host a tutor. This form can be found under the "Forms" tab.

Tutors can work one-on-one, with small groups, or in the classroom addressing math and literacy needs. A tutor must work for a minimum of one hour. Teachers may work together to provide opportunities that meet the minimum time requirement, thus providing at least one hour of work for each tutor. Tutors are available before, during and after school, and are approved for unsupervised volunteer status through the school district.

Tutors

Undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply for tutoring positions. There is no prior tutoring experience required and training will be provided. This is a great opportunity for students to get in-class experience in an educational setting and is a flexible work schedule. Each applicant must pass a background check through the Missoula County Public Schools and be eligible for work-study funding through UM. During the semesters that a tutor is enrolled in classes, they may work a maximum of 19 hours/week.
