One of our more recent transplants to the "Down Under" region, Matt is helping to spearhead efforts in New Zealand to grow our alumni base and keep us connected. We asked Matt to share with us some information about himself and how he's finding kiwi life.
What made you decide to move to New Zealand?
New Zealand seemed - and still seems - like a great place to raise kids, so my wife and I decided to pursue that. Kiwi life is also simpler in a lot of ways. Not necessarily better, as shown in the quality - or lack of - in the housing stock in a country so close to Antarctica. But life is simpler in a way that was harder for me to find anywhere in the U.S. besides Ann Arbor.
What is your favourite thing about New Zealand? Least favourite?
New Zealand’s natural beauty is unparalleled. But it’s extraordinarily expensive to live in paradise.
When were you last in Ann Arbor, and what brought you back?
The first "Under the Lights" game against Notre Dame in 2011 brought me back. Denard, man. I don’t think I could ever go to a Michigan game that would top that experience.
Why are you part of the U-M Australia and New Zealand Alumni Club?
Michigan is a part of who I am, so much so that I have a Block M tattoo. I enjoy connecting with people who share Michigan with me. My wife and kid need breaks from my maize-and-blueness too.
What advice would you have for someone else looking at moving to New Zealand?
Commit to it. Ours is a small country that is tough to immigrate to and find work in. But if you commit to the goal of moving to New Zealand and are willing to accept some sacrifices, both temporary and not as temporary, you can make it happen.
What is your most memorable travel experience, aside from New Zealand?
Mexico’s non-resort parts are a very underrated travel destination. Merida in Yucutan is a very cool city.
