The Dean, the Provost, and the Chancellor claim that there is a disconnect between enrollments and the number of faculty in CASL, as justification for the current cuts in CASL.
The University's own Institutional Research data on course enrollments, however, shows that CASL faculty numbers have declined in tandem with course enrollments over the last 15 years. Thus, ratios of enrollments and credit hours to numbers of instructors have remained remarkably steady over that entire time period.
In addition, the ratio of course enrollments to instructors in CASL is exactly aligned with the other three colleges, with CASL precisely in the middle of the pack over 15 years.

UM-Dearborn CASL: Courses, Enrollments, Faculty
From Fall 2009 to Fall 2024, the ratio of course enrollments to the number of instructors has remained fairly steady in COB and CASL, with increases in CECS and CEHHS.
COB has decreased 3%, representing an average decrease from 60 to 58 students taught by each instructor.
CASL has decreased 6%, representing an average decrease from 61 to 57 students taught by each instructor.
CECS has seen an increase of 58%, representing an average increase from 35 to 56 student taught by each instructor.
CEHHS has seen an increase of 16%, representing an average increase from 38 to 45 students taught by each instructor.
The ratio of total credit-hours-generated to instructors in CASL has remained stable over time, with a 0% change from the 2009-2010 academic year to the 2023-2024 academic year.
This means, on average, that each CASL instructor generated 328 credit hours in the 2009-2010 academic year and generated 328 credit hours in the 2023-2024 academic year. (Increasing the average to 400 credit-hours generated per instructor, as recently proposed, would represent a ~20% increase in workload across CASL instructors, on average).
From Fall 2009 to Fall 2024, the ratio of course enrollments to courses has remained fairly steady in COB and CASL, while CECS and CEHHS have seen increases. COB has decreased 3%, representing an average decrease from 26 to 25 students per class. CASL has decreased 6%, representing an average decrease from 23 to 21 students per class. CECS has seen an increase of 46%, representing an average increase from 12 to 18 student per class. CEHHS has seen an increase of 20%, representing an average increase from 16 to 19 students per class.
