Enhanced Linguistic and Affective Gains
A recent meta-analysis found that VR-assisted language learning produces medium to large positive effects on both linguistic (Hedges’ g = 0.662) and affective gains (Hedges’ g = 0.570), compared to traditional methods (Li & Cao, 2020).
Immersive and Contextual Learning Experiences
VR places learners in realistic, interactive contexts—such as virtual cafés or marketplaces—where they can practice language more authentically (Springer, 2024a). This sense of immersion enhances retention of vocabulary and grammar by combining embodiment, problem-solving, and meaningful context (Springer, 2024a).
Increased Engagement and Motivation
Studies show that VR environments make language learning more enjoyable and engaging, increasing motivation and retention rates (Feng & Ng, 2023; Talkpal, 2024). VR also promotes active participation, independence, and creativity (OpenAI, 2025).
Accessibility and Flexible Learning
Learners can enter immersive language environments from anywhere, making VR especially valuable for those without access to native speakers or immersion opportunities (Talkpal, 2024). VR also allows for flexible, personalized, and self-paced learning (Barraza, 2023).
Safe and Cost-effective Simulation
Students can safely practice language tasks in virtual environments that would be difficult, expensive, or unsafe to recreate in real life (The Guardian, 2025). VR offers repeatable, risk-free scenarios for language practice (Barraza, 2023).
Drawbacks of VR in Language Learning
High Cost and Resource Demands
Implementing VR can be costly, requiring specialized hardware, software, and technical support, which may limit access for some institutions and learners (Talkpal, 2024; Barraza, 2023; Feng & Ng, 2023).
Health and Safety Concerns
Extended VR use can lead to motion sickness, eye strain, and headaches, due to factors such as the vergence–accommodation conflict (Wikipedia contributors, 2025). Cybersickness and related discomforts remain a common barrier (Springer, 2024b).
Cognitive Load and Classroom Management Challenges
Learners may feel overwhelmed by rich VR content, leading to cognitive overload and reduced fluency during tasks (Springer, 2024b). In addition, teachers may face difficulties monitoring and managing students effectively in VR-based lessons (Li & Cao, 2020).
Reduced Human Interaction and Support
Overreliance on VR can reduce opportunities for face-to-face interaction and teacher guidance, which are vital for language learning (Feng & Ng, 2023; Campbell, 2023; LITSLink, 2023).
Equity and Accessibility Issues
Socioeconomic and technical disparities can limit equal access to VR, excluding learners who lack devices or strong internet connections (Barraza, 2023; OpenAI, 2025). Inadequate teacher training and institutional support further hinder effective implementation (OpenAI, 2025).
Isolation and Potential Overuse
While immersive, VR can sometimes reduce social bonding, leading to a sense of isolation (Talkpal, 2024; The New Yorker, 2025). There is also a risk of overuse or addictive behavior when students become overly reliant on virtual environments (The New Yorker, 2025).
