The GeeBee Model E Sportster had come out in 1930, smaller, sleeker, but it only had a 110hp power-plant. See the cowl is much smaller, and the plane looks sleeker. Zantford (Granny) Granville was delivering the 4th Model E to a client in 1933, when he crashed and died from his injuries. Shortly after Zantford’s death, the GeeBee organization went bankrupt and was sold.
We only have a handful of GeeBee designs. The GeeBee R-1 and the GeeBee R-2. What a shame the company didn’t continue and develop more designs…. What if? …
…. what if there was a GeeBee R-3?
More Sleek; More powerful and compact radial engine; Rounded lines for fast flying; Cockpit at the rear to balance the heavy, but compact engine up front. Maybe a 500hp plant that was capable of top speeds and agile pylon racing aeronautics.
This is a What if concept plane…
But what is pretty cool, is the design has been embraced by the model Radio Control flying community, and there are many of them in various scales flying perfectly well. Google “GeeBee R3” to see more, and quite a few videos on YouTube too.
