CATIA is very strong and famous for surface modeling. Surface modeling is little complicated than solid modeling. With only solid modeling knowledge you won't be able to design a complicated and irregular shaped component. You can refer the attached figures of clutch pedal, crank shaft, handle. You cannot do a correct solid model of these components in part design. It must be a combination of wireframe, surface and solid model.
If you want to design automobile body components or similar aesthetic components, you must know surface modeling.
If you know surface modeling, you will be able to do any solid model but reverse is not possible.
