1. Election Reform: Blocking S4136 in the Senate
As you know H.R. 9495 was passed in the Congressional House. H.R. 9495 was separated into 2 bills in the Senate:
S4095 Stop Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act of 2024
S4136, amends the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to terminate the tax-exempt status of terrorist supporting organizations, which is similar to the section of H.R. 9495 targeting non-profits organizations, which may be in disagreement with Trump’s policies, without providing any reasons or evidence. This could easily affect news outlets, universities, advocacy organizations, etc. Non-profit organizations would be mired in litigation to eliminate their “terrorist supporting” status, preventing them from advocating for voting rights, fighting for environmental protections, and providing services for marginalized communities.
S4136 is now in the Senate Finance Committee. Please call Senator Schumer to prevent it from coming to the Senate floor for a vote.
