Hello, I’m Ulfa Haneef Khwaja, a PhD Research Scholar at the Centre for Educational Technology, IIT Bombay and an awardee of the prestigious Manohar Parrikar Goa Scholar, a recognition granted to meritorious scholars from Goa.
My doctoral research lies at the intersection of Learning Sciences, Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), and Educational Technology. In my PhD, titled “Uncovering Collaborative Processes in an Open-Ended Learning Environment During Engineering Estimation Problem Solving”, I investigated how students collaborate in open-ended learning environments and what supports meaningful joint problem solving.
My work reveals how learners navigate complex estimation problems within a technology-enhanced environment, why negotiation is crucial for reaching shared, well-reasoned solutions, and how mechanisms such as grounding, shared regulation, and collective tool use shape deeper dialogue, coordination, and sense-making. These insights contribute to the design of future learning environments that foster richer, more intentional collaboration.
My journey into educational technology began during my Master’s in Computer Science and Technology at Goa University, where I explored the development of divergent and convergent thinking skills through a technology-enhanced learning environment. This early work sparked my long-term interest in how thoughtfully designed digital tools can transform learning experiences.
Before starting my PhD, I worked as a Senior Project Technical Assistant at IIT Bombay on several large-scale educational initiatives, including Assimilation of Open Source Software in Science and Engineering and the Next Education Research Lab. These projects connected me with educators and learners nationwide, strengthened my understanding of teaching and learning in STEM and engineering, and deepened my engagement with MOOCs, teacher professional development, and collaborative learning.
This website is my space to share my academic journey, research projects, and professional insights. If you'd like to connect or explore potential collaborations, please feel free to reach out through this platform or connect with me on LinkedIn.
