About

History

Spectra was officially founded in 2015 after meetings were arranged at the Joint Mathematicians Meeting (JMM), with the first organization event being a panel at the 2015 JMM entitled, "Out in Mathematics: LGBTQ Mathematicians in the Workplace."

Spectra is  now a nationwide organization with local chapters at various graduate institutions, serving a need to recognize and support sexual and gender minorities in mathematics. At the University of Kentucky, our mission is to provide LGBT+ individuals and allies with information and community through invited lectures, workshops, and social activities.
