WELCOME!
The Research Leadership Academy (RLA) is an interactive and participatory virtual workshop series designed to foster leadership growth among trainees, support their transition from researcher to research leader, and introduce participants to key research leadership topics that are often overlooked during academic coursework but can have a significant impact on the success of an individual’s research career.
We recognize that leadership comes in many forms and is present throughout our careers. We can affect change now – in ourselves, in our relationships, and eventually in our organizations. We seek to foster an inclusive environment to explore our leadership by encouraging curiosity.
This series focuses on global health leadership competencies including:
•Effective communication
•Cross-cultural practice
•Stakeholder engagement
•Equitable partnerships in research
•Project and team management
•Capacity strengthening
•Grantsmanship
The entire series will be viewed through the lenses of equity, ethical practice, and anti-colonialism.
• Pre-orientation pls three modules aligned to trainee experiences over the course of their fellowship year (Pre-departure, Early fellowship, and Late fellowship)
• Modules are facilitated by at least one topic area expert inclusive of alumni and mentors to ensure a diverse range of voices across the different sessions.
• Combination of preparatory activities/assignments, short lectures, breakout discussion sessions, and skills-building activities.
• Virtual | Synchronous | On Zoom
• Optional 1:1 professional development and leadership coaching with Dr. Anna Kalbarczyk (see below)
The series is designed to actively engage trainees, build skills through practice, and evolve with the trainee experience.

Session lead: Dr. Anna Kalbarczyk (JHU)
Fellow preparation assignments and resources:
1) Please pre-read the following two articles and consider (maybe even write a short 1-2 paragraph reflection): What leadership theories/models/frameworks have you already been introduced to? What has resonated for you and why? Come prepared to explore, discuss, and challenge some perceptions of leadership.
The first article is on global and indigenous leadership.
The second article reports results from the GLOBE study.
2) Visit the Implicit Association Test website and take the Gender-Career test. This will take approximately 15 minutes. Record your result and reflect - is this the result you expected? Why or why not? How does your result make you feel? If you have time consider doing the Religion IAT or any of the others that interest you.

Please read and think of an example of where working on cross-cultural teams have led to an issue and how you addressed it. It doesn’t have to be a major problem; it’s more the process that is most interesting!
Please read this interesting piece that Anna shared that casts the topic in a more theoretical light. We’ll talk a bit about the framework in the paper. Please come prepared with thoughts to share.

1:1 Professional Development / Leadership Coaching
Fellows have the option of signing up for one on one professional development / leadership coaching with Dr. Anna Kalbarczyk.
What is coaching? Coaching sessions are designed to explore current and unresolved professional and professional adjacent issues (i.e. work/life balance). Unlike mentoring or advising, coaching will help Fellows explore their relationship to the issue from their own unique perspectives and generate solutions that work for them and to which they can be held accountable.
Each session will last approximately 45 minutes and will be held on Zoom.
Fellows who opt-in to this service should plan on a minimum of 2 sessions and a maximum of 3.
You can schedule your sessions here.
