Service Learning
The fifth and final component in the Grand Challenge Scholars Program is to give back through service learning. The Grand Challenges will only be achieved through working with others. Scholars must learn to give back while simultaneously acquiring new knowledge. Please read below about my service learning trip to Uruguay.
University Of Idaho Alternative Service Break
Los Pinos, Uruguay
In Winter 2018-2019, I traveled to Uruguay for two weeks on an alternative service break with a team of 12 from the University of Idaho. While in Uruguay, we assisted community partners in increasing sustainable practices such as agroecological farming and earth-building. We helped build a mud wall shed, a greenhouse, chicken coup, and weeded many gardens. While we helped the community, they taught us sustainable practices and the culture and way of life in Uruguay. This trip was the perfect link between service learning and a global dimension.
