Going to college can be stressful. Students are frequently unsure what to expect! Deciding what courses to take and what organizations to join can feel overwhelming. Below are answers to some questions we often hear about UIC Orchestra.
How do I join the UIC Orchestra?
UICO is open to all students at UIC with prior experience playing a string instrument. If that's you, register for MUS 157, University Orchestras. That's all you need to do!
I am worried about keeping up with my coursework. Do I have time to play in Orchestra?
You almost certainly do! UICO meets for two hours, twice per week. We also have a couple of concerts per semester (usually two). Other than that, you are not required to attend lessons, sectionals, or extra practice outside of class time--EVER.
Additionally, remember that managing your academics requires a healthy life which includes hobbies and social outlets (like music!). Playing your instrument is a way for you to have a mental and emotional reset in the middle of your week.
Is Orchestra a class?
Yes, Orchestra at UIC and most colleges is a course that meets for credit. At UIC, your grade in Orchestra is based on your rehearsal attendance. No playing tests!
Does UICO play any music with winds and percussion?
Yes! Interested wind and percussion players are invited to join us!
Will I have to practice outside of class?
No! While we would never tell anyone not to practice their instrument, no individual practice is required. We work hard in rehearsal so you can learn the music during our class time.
But if you do want to practice, the UIC School of Theatre and Music has several practice rooms that are open to all, first-come, first-served.
Do I have to audition?
We have auditions at the start of the school year to get to know you as a person and to determine seating assignments. This is not an acceptance audition, though--all string players with prior experience are accepted into UICO!Â
I need an instrument. What should I do?
We do have some university-owned instruments available for students to borrow. Fill out this form, and be sure to click "yes, I need to borrow an instrument."
I'm looking for extra challenges on my instrument in addition to Orchestra. What is available at UIC?
Qualified students may be eligible to play in our chamber music program. We also have a Concerto & Aria Competition every fall, and the winners perform as soloists on UIC concerts the following spring. Students who want even more music in their lives are encouraged to consider a minor in music (find out more here) or even a major.
Am I good enough to play in UICO?
Yes! String players of all skill levels are welcome. And don't be so hard on yourself. If you like to play, you should play!
