Citation Styles

In-text citations are used within an essay whenever borrowed information is used. An in-text citation is placed after a paraphrase or direct quotation within an essay. In-text citations should include a parenthesis and author's last name. Different formatting styles require different types of information within in-text citations. At UH-West O'ahu, the two most common formatting styles are APA and MLA style.

The Citation Game!

For this activity, you will need to complete the APA and MLA citation game. This game will test your knowledge of APA and MLA formatting styles.

Instructions

1. Click here to access the APA and MLA citation game
2. To play, drag and drop the citation pieces in the correct order for that type.
3. When you think your answer is correct, click the "Check" button.
4. If your answer is incorrect, you can click the Restart button or move the pieces around and click the Check button again.
5. If you need help, click the Hint button and it will tell you what is right.
6. If your answer is correct, click the forward arrow to move to the next citation or click Index to choose a different citation type.
