Many students have argued that they didn't know they were plagiarizing, but ignorance is not an excuse for plagiarism. It is a student's responsibility to find out what is acceptable and what is considered cheating, both for individual and group assignments.

This means:

• If you are not sure what is acceptable, ask!
• If you do not know when/how to use quotations, ask!
• If you do not know when/how to use citations, ask!
• If you are not sure when/how to indicate the sources of your information, ask!

There are many people on campus who can help if you are not sure how to avoid plagiarism. Please consider turning to the following resources for help:

• Your instructor. (Ask questions in class or during office hours, or request a meeting.)
• A face-to-face, phone, or video conference appointment with a No'eau Center tutor. (Call (808) 689-2750, stop by B-203, or request an appointment here. Appointments are always recommended.)
