During the 2024-2025 school year, the UH Terry Scholars engaged in many exciting events that allowed them to create long lasting friendships and memories.
Six workshops were conducted, covering topics such as preparing for the annual Terry Banquet, studying abroad, and even managing finances! These workshops were a great opportunity to bring back and connect with our wonderful alumni. Special shoutout to Christen Barron (UH '07), John Rangel (TAMU '12), and Larose Mutombo (UH '20), who all shared special insight about their career fields and tips on navigating college life! This was also our first time implementing a networking challenge, which encouraged all scholars to reach out and interact with alumni before, during, and after banquet.
Seven social events were held throughout the year, with crowd favorites being our socials at Cidercade and our annual Holiday Potluck. Cidercade kicked off our long list of events for the year and was an evening filled with retro video games and intense Dance Dance Revolution battles! It was the first official opportunity for all scholars to meet and hang out with each other outside of school. The Holiday Potluck is a wonderful tradition for scholars to bring a dish to share with others during a night filled with fun activities. From competing in Gingerbread Decorating competitions to White Elephant gift exchanges, this is the social you wouldn't want to miss! We also took advice from our freshmen scholars and tested out our first ever Java Jive, a night filled with coffee, music, poetry, and relaxed vibes.
Eight volunteering focused events ensured our promise to always giving back to our community. We started off the semester by volunteering at the Houston Food Bank with our alumni, where we were able to assist in making14 pallets, 336 boxes of food, 10,080 pounds of food, and 8,400 meals for the Houston community. Then, right in time for the holiday season, we hosted a canned food drive where we were able to make 300 meals for those in the surrounding Houston community. But, by far our most impactful act of volunteering was our fundraiser held in honor of Howard Terry and his legacy of "Giveback Day." We sold hoodies and sweaters and collaborated with Royal Roastery to raise more than $1200 for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund!
So with that being said, your 2025-2026 officer team is dedicated to making this year one filled with exciting memories and new opportunities. We want to hear what YOU have in mind, so please please share your thoughts about our events and be open to expressing your ideas, no matter how bizarre they may be!
With Love, your 2025-2026 Officer Team ❤️
