Approved by UHSAA Executive Committee - July 31, 2025
All UHSAA Region Theatre Competitions MUST have a Meet Director present at the One Act Competition, Design Competition, and Acting Individual Event Competition. However, the role of the Meet Director at Region is a much more limited capacity than at State. Region Meet Directors can be paid like a judge ($100/half day, $200/day) since their role is not as intensive as a State Meet Director.
Region Meet Directors MUST:
Run all Judge's Trainings and answer competition specific questions. The Region Rep or Host School Coach may be present to answer logistical questions about food, timing, locations.
Ensure accurate timing of all One Act plays, Design Competition Presentations, and Acting IE Rounds
Settle all disputes on issues pertaining to judge eligibility, rule violations, tie breakers, clerical errors during and up to 72 hours after the competition
Be present for the majority of score tabulation (although it is anticipated that Meet Directors may need to step away at times)
Region Meet Directors DO NOT NEED TO:
Handle the hiring of judges, creation of the scoring spreadsheet, or creation of the paneling for IE rounds (Coaches can continue these roles)
Hire a team of tabulators to tabulate all ballots. (Coaches can continue to tabulate and enter scores in their Region Spreadsheet)
Post Finals Round information to competitors
Run the Awards Ceremony at the end of the Region Competition (although they are welcome to join)
Our request to the Executive Committee to have Region 7 compete at the 6A Competition was denied. The Executive Committee wanted to keep it 6A only.
After official voting at State Competitions in 2025, the rule about how blocks/stools/chairs can be utilized in a pantomime will have no change. Effectively, that means that the blocks/stools/chairs can be handled in any way during the pantomime to help facilitate pantomime needs as their is no rule limiting their use.
UHSAA is changing the physical medals purchased for region and state competitions. If you have old hardware, please return it to the UHSAA office in Midvale, Utah. Or reach out to someone driving towards Salt Lake and we can get it from you.
Changes in Medals Given:
At Region - Participants receiving 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in an IE should not ALSO receive a Superior Medal. One medal is satisfactory. We have promised the Regions we will do this to help offset the cost of the newly required Region Meet Director. (It could means as many as 51 fewer Superior Medals at each competition).

Changes in Medals Given:
At State - Only the top 20% of participants in each IE category will receive a Superior Medal to put emphasis on excellent work, especially for those students who just miss Finals Round.
If there are fewer than about 40 pieces in a category at a State competition, 20% becomes a very small number, so there is a caveat to the rule -- Superior Medals will also be awarded to all students who make Finals Round, even if 20% of participants is technically below the number of Finals Round participants.
In the Design Competition where there is no Finals Round - Superior Medals will be awarded to the top 20% of participants, or top 5 participants, whichever number is higher.
