UHN Simcom Committee:
Dr. Nadia Farooki (Chair)
Dr. Nadia Farooki completed her medical education at McGill University. She then joined the McGill Royal College Emergency Medicine Residency Program where she gained valuable expertise in resuscitation and critical care interventions. During residency, she focused her area of interest on medical education through simulation. Dr. Farooki is currently employed as a full time staff physician in emergency medicine at the University Health Network (UHN) and is a lecturer at the University of Toronto. She is completing her Master's Degree in Medical Simulation though the University of Illinois in Chicago. Her thesis is centered on Latent Safety Threats and their impact on the leadership team. She is the creator and chair of the UHN Emergency Medicine Simulation Committee (SimCom). Dr. Farooki also represents UHN on the simulation committee for the University of Toronto’s Royal College Residency Program in emergency medicine.
Dr. Monika Kapoor
Dr. Kapoor has been working in the UHN ED since 2010. Her medical interests include simulation education and mental health.
Dr. Soojin Yi (InSitu Co-Coordinator)
Dr. Yi is currently working in the emergency department at the University Health Network. She completed her Family Medicine residency at McGill University in 2012, and her Emergency Medicine subspecialty competency year (CCFP-EM) also at McGill University in 2013. Soojin has been an active member of the simulation committee at UHN since 2018 and leads the in situ simulation program along with Dr. Kate Hayman. In her spare time Soojin can usually be found by the lakeshore on her light but mighty Pinarello.
Dr. Dawn Lim
Dr. Lim is a Toronto EM lifer. Outside of her simulation activities, her favourite pastimes include creative writing, photography, travel, and keeping up with the antics of her two little kids! She enjoys staving off dementia by learning violin and speaking Mandarin very badly.
Dr. Andrea Somers (UHN EM Conference Coordinator)
Dr. Kate Hayman (InSitu Co-Coordinator)
Dr. Hayman is a co-lead for the in situ simulation program. She is interested in utilizing simulation in our emergency departments to foster inter-professional communication, practice high stress tasks in a low(ish) stress environment, and identify safety threats that we'd not yet thought of. In addition to her work at UHN, she enjoys utilizing simulation-based co-learning during field work with Medecins Sans Frontieres.
Dr. Maxim Ben-Yakov
Dr. Alia Dharamsi (Knowledge Translation Extraordinaire)
Alia is a Staff Emergency Physician at the University Health Network; co-lead for ED In Situ Simulation; TAAAC Simulation Director; a former Simulation, Health Sciences and Resuscitation [SHRED] Fellow; and alumna of the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust [ARHT] Helicopter Emergency Medical Services [HEMS]. While collecting fellowship acronyms, she spent the last few years exploring the limitless potential of EM in Canada, South Africa, Ethiopia, the USA, and New Zealand. From high fidelity, to low technology, Alia’s “have mannequin will travel” attitude turns any grassy patch, muddy field, backyard pool, sandy beach, or dark corner into a sim lab—bringing mother nature in as a confederate to the organized chaos of simulation. Since joining UHN, Alia’s interest has been in hybridizing knowledge translation, quality improvement, and simulation via infographics, videos, and just about any other way she can engage her buds in simulation.
Dr. Boon Chang (Tech Support)
After completing the CCFP-EM Program at the University of Western Ontario, Dr. Chang has worked at UHN since 2009 in the emergency department. His side goal is to work at every emergency department in Ontario. He also likes to watch racecar drivers smash their expensive vehicles at the track and waits for the opportunity to help drag them out of their wreck. He's not the creepy looking guy in the backseat.
