SO WHAT IS THE URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT (UHIE)?

LEARN ALL ABOUT IT USING THE RESOURCES BELOW!

"An urban heat island occurs when a city experiences much warmer temperatures than nearby rural areas. The difference in temperature between urban and less-developed rural areas has to do with how well the surfaces in each environment absorb and hold heat." Read more at the NASA Climate Kids Website for Urban Heat Islands at: https://climatekids.nasa.gov/heat-islands/.

Explore this interactive Story Map on the Creation of Urban Heat Islands, created by My NASA Data! "This story map allows students to explore the urban heat island effect using land surface temperature and vegetation data. Students will investigate the processes that create differences in surface temperatures, as well as how human activities have led to the creation of urban heat islands."

WATCH SOME SHORT VIDEOS ABOUT THE URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT

climatebits: urban heat islands

This 2 minute video "explains urban heat islands - the concept that cities are warmer than the surrounding countryside. Paving over natural landscapes removes the cooling effect that plants have through evaporation and water retention. Paved surfaces absorb more of the sun's energy during the day and emit that heat back into the air at night. This video features NASA satellite imagery. Land surface temperatures demonstrate seasonal variability. Lights at night fade to summertime urban-rural temperature differences to highlight areas around the world that experience the urban heat island effect. Produced in collaboration with the Science Museum of Virginia (supported by NOAA Environmental Literacy Grant #NA15SEC0080009). For more information, visit http://climatebits.org."

NASA Video - Urban heat islands

This 2 minute NASA video describes the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) and how it causes urban areas to be called "Urban Heat Islands". It also looks at how NASA scientists study this phenomenon. In addition, it shows some satellite imagery of different cities and GIS maps of their Urban Heat Islands.

TurfMutt tackles the heat island effect

Here's a 3 minute video for kids! "Lucky and his friends the Outdoor Powers talk about how green spaces and living landscapes keep things cooler. Watch Green Ranger combat Heat Freak. The heat island effect happens in cities. It's caused by hard surfaces like streets and sidewalks that absorb heat. We can fight the heat island effect by having climate-appropriate grass, plants and trees in our yards. Eight front lawns have the same cooling power as 18 home air conditioning units. For more information, go to www.TurfMutt.com."

Use the slider bar to explore global temperature over time, from the 1800s to the present. "This color-coded map shows a progression of changing global surface temperatures since 1884. Dark blue indicates areas cooler than average. Dark red indicates areas warmer than average." Explore this NASA Climate Kids website at: https://climatekids.nasa.gov/time-machine/.

Learn about the causes of air pollution. "Air pollution is caused by solid and liquid particles and certain gases that are suspended in the air. These particles and gases can come from car and truck exhaust, factories, dust, pollen, mold spores, volcanoes and wildfires. The solid and liquid particles suspended in our air are called aerosols."
