What is the Urban Heat Island Effect? It's when cities tend to be hotter than their surroundings due to all of the concrete and asphalt, and less trees. Dr. Kevin Czajkowski ("Dr. C"), lead scientist for the GLOBE Program's Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) effort, needs YOU to collect data near you to help us all understand this topic better! Use the links below to help you get started collecting your own data and sharing it with other students, all around the world!

STUDENT PROJECTS
GLOBE Mission EARTH students and participants have completed their own research projects into the UHIE, check some of them out here! Student projects of all ages (K-college) are highlighted, and some even include video.
WE NEED YOUR DATA!
WE NEED DATA FROM SPORTS FIELDS!
Do you have a sports field near you? A soccer field? A football field? If YES, Dr. C needs your help! Even if it's artificial turf! Collect Surface Temperature, Air Temperature and Clouds data!
When? Any day, any time! But if you can time it so that there's a satellite flyover your area, that would be best!

Dr. Kevin Czajkowski
Lead Scientist GLOBE Mission EARTH
Professor of Geography and Planning, University of Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A.
Dr. Kevin Czajkowski, or "Dr. C" as his students call him, is the lead scientist and developer of the Surface Temperature protocol for the GLOBE Program (www.globe.gov). He is also the Principal Investigator (PI) of GLOBE Mission EARTH (www.globe.gov/web/mission-earth). Watch as he discusses the UHIE Campaign and conducting student research. Janet Struble
Project Manager
GLOBE Mission EARTH
Janet Struble is the Project Manager for GLOBE Mission EARTH and retired middle school teacher of 20 years. She was also a lead investigator of the LEADERS Program, and has been involved in GLOBE for over 25 years.
Sara Mierzwiak
Research Assistant
GLOBE Mission EARTH
Sara Mierzwiak is a Research Assistant with GLOBE Mission EARTH, and also serves as the team's Web Developer. She is also currently the North American Representative for the GLOBE Program's Technology Working Group.
Dr. Yitong Jiang
Research Assistant
GLOBE Mission EARTH
Dr. Yitong Jiang is a Research Assistant with GLOBE Mission EARTH. Her research focuses on Remote Sensing and GIS on surface temperature and moisture. She also has experience teaching in classrooms, fields, and laboratories on remote sensing, environmental sciences, and world cultures.
Olawale "Femi" Oluwafemi
Research Assistant
GLOBE Mission EARTH
Olawale "Femi" Oluwafemi is a Research Assistant with GLOBE Mission Earth and a doctoral student majoring in the Department of Geography and Planning, University of Toledo, Ohio. His research interests include environmental and space education, GIS and remote sensing, and physical geography. He also has an interest in Health Geography.
Dr.Farrokh Namjooyan
Research Assistant GLOBE Mission EARTH
Dr. Farrokh Namjooyan is a Research Assistant with GLOBE Mission EARTH from university of Toledo, Ohio.
Her research focuses on urban heat island, Air quality, Urban resilience and environmental education. She also has experience teaching as a GLOBE teacher using NASA protocols and Globe observer app in fields.
Ishfaq Rahman
Research Assistant GLOBE Mission EARTH
Ishfaq Rahman is a Research Assistant with GLOBE Mission Earth and a doctoral student majoring in the Department of Geography and Planning, University of Toledo, Ohio. His research interests include GIS and Geospatial Bigdata. He also has an interest in Remote Sensing.
Shari Grayczyk
Budget Manager
GLOBE Mission EARTH
Shari Grayczyk is the Budget Manager for GLOBE Mission EARTH and Grant Manager for the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Toledo. She has worked with Dr. C. since 2007.
