Outreach

Our outreach and community service activities include--but are not limited to--The Big Event, Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics, Keep Alachua County Beautiful, Girls Build Day, Food Drives, Project Makeover, Alachua County Humane Society, and Girls Engaged in Engineering.

Upcoming Outreach Events

Canned Food Drive and Games Night

  • Description: Join your fellow society members for a night of fun card and board games; however, it's a social with a benevolent twist! Just attending the social will earn you an Internal point. Bringing two canned goods will also earn you an Outreach points. We will be donating the canned goods to UF's very own Field and Fork Pantry, a food pantry for both students and staff. For more information about their cause, please visit their website. Even if you can't spare the cans, we hope to see you there!

Past Outreach Events

GCM Food Pantry Maintenance

  • We are returning to work at GCM in preparation for their next drive event! We always have a lot of fun and are able to make a real difference when we attend. This time will be slightly different, as the city of Gainesville is getting rid of plastic bags to help save the environment. Thus, we will be organizing the pantry, such as sorting and checking expiry dates, rather than bagging food.

Alachua County Humane Society

  • The BME Graduate Student Council (GSC) will be hosting a volunteer event with the Alachua County Humane Society! The service will involve assisting in puppy and dog adoption at the local PetSmart. We encourage you to participate in this event and will be offering outreach points per shift. To sign up, please send an email to jahnelle.jordan@ufl.edu with your contact information and desired shift. Sign up as soon as possible to attend!

Habitat for Humanity

  • Description: Come support the community by building a home for people in need. No prior experience or construction skills are necessary as the site coordinator will lead us through the various tasks. We are looking for a team of 10-15 volunteers for this site. Carpool available and lunch (likely pizza) is provided. Note: You do not need to register for both of our Habitat for Humanity dates.

The Big Event

  • Description: Save the date for the largest community service event in Gainesville! We don't know our exact project until the event, but it's guaranteed to be a fun time! To register, visit the application website, and then click on "ONLINE STUDENT SIGN-UP." Paste our access group code (83F43-00154 ) into the box and select "+JOIN GROUP." Then fill out and submit the form. If you do not join our group, you will not receive a point from BMES for this event. Registration is closed.

Project Makeover Weekend

  • Description: Project Makeover is a University of Florida student-run nonprofit organization dedicated to serving low-income elementary schools in Alachua County. Every year they select one elementary school with the mission to create a more dynamic learning environment for elementary students through project assembly, landscaping, and painting. The Makeover Weekend this year will take place from Friday, February 22nd - Sunday, February 24th at Lake Forest Elementary School. BMES pledged 16 volunteers to volunteer one three-hour shift on Sunday; to sign up, contact Aria, our Director of Outreach. Carpool available.

Mill Creek Farm Retirement Home for Horses

  • Description: Mill Creek Farm provides lifetime care to elderly horses seized by law enforcement agencies, rescued by the SPCA or humane societies, as well as horses retired from government service such as police patrol or state and federal parks. They promise each and every horse that they will never be ridden or worked again and that they can roam freely and live out their life here in tranquility. We will be helping with a variety of projects that range from picking up branches in the horses pastures, painting the posts on the horses shelters, and pulling non-native plants encroaching on the woods. Last time we assisted in feeding and grooming the horses. Carpool available.

Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Network Supply Drive

  • Description: The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is partnering with us to sponsor a supply drive to benefit the Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Network. Collection boxes will be found in SWE's office (Weil Hall, room 274) and in front of the Undergraduate Cell Lab (BMS, JG05). To earn a point, donate $5 of supplies from the supplies list.

Holiday Cards for Ronald McDonald's House Charities

  • Description: Let's spread some warm wishes as the holiday chill rolls in. We will be making holiday cards for the less fortunate that the Director of Outreach will then deliver within the Gainesville community. It should be a fun time, and both holiday treats and craft supplies will be provided.

Ministry & USDA Food Drive

  • Description: A team of eighteen volunteers worked with with Gainesville Community Ministry to bag food from the USDA. These food bags will be given to 150 underprivileged families in the Gainesville community.
  • Date/Time: Saturday, November 3rd from 10:00AM to 12:00PM

Fall Day of Service

  • Description: The Brown Center for Leadership and Service hosts an annual day of service and reflection with a variety of projects. Our organization will be registering for the Days for Girls International project. Days for Girls increases access to menstrual care and education by developing global partnerships, cultivating social enterprises, mobilizing volunteers, and innovating sustainable solutions that shatter stigmas and limitations for women and girls. This project involves assembling hygiene kits with both sewing and non-sewing tasks. More details regarding this project can be found on the registration page. No experience is necessary, and carpooling is available.
  • Date/Time: Saturday, October 20th from 7:30AM to 1:00PM, meeting on campus and then traveling to the work site

UF BMES X Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry Swabbing

  • Description: The Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry is singularly passionate about engaging the public to get everyone involved in curing blood cancer, whether as a donor, a volunteer, or a financial supporter. It all begins with one remarkable person, one life-changing swab, and one huge win: finding a match and a cure. UF BMES is partnering with them to try to build the registry on swab at a time. The registration process takes ten minutes or less, but we'll be there from 5:30-6:30PM, so stop by when you have some time. Yes, this ten minute event does give you an outreach point for the Fall semester. You do NOT need to RSVP in advance.

Alachua County Humane Society

  • Description: Our group will be helping the animals by cleaning with half going to cats and the other half going to dogs. The team of volunteers is strictly capped at ten members, and spots will fill quickly, so contact the Director of Outreach ASAP to reserve your spot on our team. Let's have some fun with animals in need of loving homes! Carpool available.
  • Date/Time: Saturday, September 29th from 3:00PM to 5:00PM

Gainesville Community Ministry & USDA Food Drive

  • Description: A team of ten volunteers work with with Gainesville Community Ministry to bag food from the USDA. These food bags will be given to hundreds of families in the Gainesville community. Volunteer spots are first come first served. Carpool available.
  • Date/Time: Saturday, September 22nd from 10:00AM to 12:00PM

Gainesville Community Ministry Food Pantry

  • Description: Twelve volunteers gathered to organize the food pantry at Gainesville Community Ministry and fill bags in preparation for an upcoming food drive.

Ivory's Place Mentorship Program

  • Description: Ivory's Place Mentorship Program is a program that mentors women (ages 18-35) convicted of crimes to help them return to the community. They are currently looking for more mentors. Our Director of Outreach (Aria Henderson) has the contact information of the founder, Min. Janie Crawford, if you are interested in learning more about the mentor requirements and application.
