Chronic kidney disease is a global health problem. According to the CDC, renal failure is the eighth leading cause of death in America. Affecting 50 million people worldwide, chronic kidney disease is deadly not only because of the number of people it affects but also because it is a silent disease, often going undiagnosed because those who have it do not usually experience symptoms—even during late stages requiring dialysis. An article published by the CDC in 2023 states that about one in three adults with severe chronic kidney disease are unaware of their condition. KDSAP aims to help those who may be at increased risk for kidney disease before it is too late. This is important because the number of Americans expected to have renal failure continues to climb each year. Information on trends in this condition may be found here.
As with many other health conditions, kidney disease disproportionately affects African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanics. The graphics below provide information on kidney disease and the disparities within it.
