Shadowing in the EDs at John Dempsey Hospital and Hartford Hospital is available to all UConn medical students after they have completed their first semester of first year.
Before shadowing for the first time, please complete the form available beside the schedule in the Emergency Department office.
Visit the Emergency Department office (basement level, on the corridor between the Office of Student Affairs and Labor & Delivery)
Check the schedule and sign up for a maximum of 3 shifts per month by putting your initials beside the name of the faculty member with whom you wish to work

Start by shadowing at John Dempsey Hospital. Hartford can be very hectic and it is easy to get lost at first. Plan to shadow there later when you have built your skills.
Wear your white coat and either scrubs or professional clothing. Both are fine. Bring your stethoscope.
Introduce yourself to the faculty member you have signed up to shadow. It is not necessary but can be helpful to email them ahead of time to let them know you will be working with them.
You can stay for 2 hours, 4 hours, or the whole shift. It is helpful to let the faculty member know until what time you will be staying.
