UCMAS is a child development program based on Visual Arithmetic and Abacus that boosts brainpower in children aged 4-13 years.
Put your skills to the test! Try the following calculations:
How long did it take? Did you resort to using a calculator, electronic spreadsheet, or paper and pencil?
And with practice and dedication, we can train your youngster too. The above problems are actual sums that children learn and master over the course of the UCMAS Visual Arithmetic program. Starting with an Abacus and eventually progressing to Visual Arithmetic, these young “math magicians” learn to do all arithmetic calculations of up to 10 digits in their head, without relying on aids such as calculators or paper and pencil.
UCMAS promotes whole brain development, using the Abacus as a tool and Arithmetic as a medium.
At UCMAS, students harness the power of the Abacus and mental arithmetic to boost their brainpower. The Abacus has been a trusted teaching tool for thousands of years and is still used today in parts of Asia and Russia. UCMAS uses the Japanese Abacus, called the Soroban, to help students visualize numbers on a base-10 system. Students learn to manipulate the countable beads to perform arithmetic calculations such as addition/subtraction and multiplication/division.
Over the last 25 years, several internationally noted research papers explored the secondary benefits of Abacus learning for children. These benefits include enhancements in mental capacity, intuitive thinking, problem-solving and mental endurance. UCMAS students have fun using the world’s oldest calculator and see their math ability and overall confidence grow!
Manipulating the beads of the Abacus helps children develop ease with numbers and gives them a new perspective on how math works. Once students become adept at performing on the Abacus, they are trained to visualize the Abacus and ‘picture’ the beads moving as they swiftly solve problems in their mind. This emphasis on seeing in pictures is what sets the UCMAS approach apart.
Visual Arithmetic is the essential building block that replaces the physical Abacus in the child’s mind. Using snapshots of a virtual Abacus enables students to engage their right brain and solve questions much more quickly than they could before. The figures that are to be calculated are visualized as beads on the Abacus, as opposed to numerals.
This crucial concept of thinking in pictures and using the right brain leads to clearer thinking, improved memory, faster calculation speed, and greater efficiency and accuracy. By the end of the UCMAS mental arithmetic program, students will have stored over 450,000 Abacus images in their memory.

UCMAS is not just a tutoring center, our whole-brain development program builds foundational capabilities through a series of in-class training activities conducted by our trained class instructors. Our rigorous training techniques at Abacus Maths Classes are based on a pedagogical design by child development experts to ensure our students can benefit from and be successful in our program.
Understanding math through the Abacus inspires new perspectives: children learn to subtract by adding; multiply without multiplying and perform long division problems in their head faster than most people can add two numbers together.
Our students learn techniques that will stay with them long after they’ve completed the program. Our program also supports and augments what students learn in school.
The UCMAS program is designed to develop integrated and motoring functions from both sides of the brain. Better focus and concentration coupled with enhanced creativity and memory help students swiftly determine the component parts of a problem and devise a viable solution – and not just in Math – but in navigating effectively through everyday life.
Our whole-brain development program builds foundational techniques that make learning math, effortless and enjoyable. By mastering these techniques using the Abacus, students develop the ability to think in pictures and quickly learn to perform large calculations mentally. Over time, our students come to love a subject they may have once struggled with, or even feared. Attaining astonishing calculation speed is actually the end result of increasing the “brain fitness”
Students learn to focus for sustained periods, to manage their time while completing long series of sums, as well as, to concentrate on more than one task at the same time while. These are crucial life skills that students will use again and again.
UCMAS Abacus for kids training demands self-discipline and promotes the joy of lifelong learning and self-discovery. Our students become motivated learners – the best route to success in academics and beyond.
Since UCMAS is a brain development program with an emphasis on speed and accuracy, children get trained for immense concentration in the classroom sessions. One second of lost concentration will get them a wrong answer and hence they form the constant habit of focusing on verbal number instructions, flashing of cards, and visual reading of numbers done by their instructors.
UCMAS is a unique mental math program that builds the observation power within a child. Quizzing children on flashcards, trains them to build on observation skills. With the emphasis on rapid image recognition and calculation with the abacus, the brain behaves like a scanner, which scans the surroundings and follows the hand-eye coordination thus makes a child more observant.
Memory is the capacity of the brain to Receive, Retain, and Recall (3Rs). In this program, students are trained on the physical and the visual abacus to recognize the beads and calculate using mathematical formulae. When high-speed calculations are embodied using the 3 learning styles: auditory skills with verbal instructions, visual skills with recognition of images, and tactile and kinesthetic skills with hands-on use of abacus; children quickly identify the image, recall the corresponding number and the formula that has been retained in memory and with consistent practice enhances long-term memory power in a child.
Imagination leads to invention. UCMAS mental math uses the concept of semi-image on the abacus. This helps students to unleash the capacity of the brain, which makes them visualize and convert the digits into images using the tangible beads of the abacus. Later, calculate visually and again process them back into the written form of numbers.
Creativity stems from a highly imaginative well-developed brain. In the UCMAS program, most of the calculation and finger movements are done by the left hand, which is controlled by the right side of the brain the more left-hand movement will develop on the right side of the brain. This enables students to develop their creative skills.
Judgment requires a balanced understanding, of perspectives and context of a particular subject. UCMAS enhances creativity and imagination, which helps analyze the vision and perspective engaging the right side of the brain. The program also enhances observation and memory to understand logically and analyze the situation, strongly engaging the left side of the brain. This balanced approach ensures a good sense of judgment within a child.
Application is the art of understanding a situation or a context and then applying your wisdom and knowledge to give a better meaning to the situation. Comprehending and analyzing with good judgment and a well-balanced brain will help a child enhance his/ her application skills. UCMAS program enhances all these required skills through a very systematic and scientific approach.
To reason about anything or with anyone, you require a well-balanced, logical, and analytical brain. The UCMAS program constantly triggers both sides of the brain by training children on the abacus and mental math. With tools like flashcards and techniques like jumbled dictation, speed writing, and more, children apply sequencing and formula recalling in their calculations, which enables them to analyze and strengthen their reasoning ability.
Success and self-confidence have an absolute interconnection. With UCMAS children become motivated learners as they acquire a unique lifelong skill, which gives them a superior standing over others, in their grade and age. Their enhanced cognitive skills and strongly developed mental math ability gives them a great sense of accomplishment and boost their self-esteem and confidence levels.
