The College of Engineering, Kakinada, which would later become part of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada, was established in the year 1946, in Kakinada, then part of the composite Madras state. Though originally intended for Visakhapatnam, it was temporarily located in Kakinada's abandoned military barracks due to fears of bombing during the Second World War. The institution was initially affiliated with Andhra University and commenced with 105 students across three branches: Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering.
The College of Engineering Kakinada, established in the year 1946, was considered as constituent college of Jawaharlal Technological University Hyderabad and it has been renamed as JNTU College of Engineering, Kakinada, in the year 1972. The Computer Science and Engineering department was started in the year 1989. This institution was given Academic Autonomy in the year 2000. The World Bank recognized its excellence, providing substantial grants under TEQIP for its development in three phases.
Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada (JNTUK) was established in the year 2008, emerging from the trifurcation of JNTU Hyderabad. University College of Engineering Kakinada has become Constituent college of this University. New Courses, viz., Petro Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Departments are started. The development of this campus is emphasized in Research and Innovations. NAAC A+ grade has been given in the year 2023. Further this University has started new campus at Narsaraopet. NBA accreditation for all its engineering programs is the crown of this University.
