One skill I would like to learn is how to do mental math well.
Mathematics is one of my interests and in order for me to be better at it, I need to learn to be less reliant on calculators. This way, not only will I be able to do my math homework faster, I will be able to understand other people's work processes if they did use a calculator. I want to be a math tutor to get my remaining service hours so mental math would be a useful skill to have.
As for how to acquire this skill, I will achieve it through practice.
Work on solving homework problems without the use of a calculator, (for example in Calculus class).
Finding a math teacher at school who can help me build a strong math foundation and explain concepts.
Seeing if my mental math improved by helping my friends with their homework, which could also be good practice.
Speed Reading
Another skill I want to develop is the ability to speed read.
Reading is another one of my interests and being able to speed read would help with many aspects of life. I could read more in a shorter span of time in reading assignments, read through and understand problems on timed tests more quickly and be more efficient when it comes to peer reading essays.
Of course I would need to work on being able to understand what I am speed reading. Reading is another skill that is acquired through practice.
Start reading a lot of books, whether they be textbooks, primary documents or books from the library. If I read enough I'll build a strong vocabulary.
Joining another after school group like I did in 11th grade could help with improving my reading speed.
To put my improvement to the test, I can take an online SAT or AP practice test to see if I can speed read effectively as well as understand it.
Learning more Programming Languages
Being able to understand and learn more HTML and CSS is also a skill I want to learn over the next year.
Ever since 9th grade, Programming has been one of the possible careers I wanted to pursue. Improving the amount of HTML and CSS I know would help me at coding. After all if I know more of the language, I will be better at its applications.
I could utilize websites like Code Academy and Khan Academy as well as email past teachers like Mr. Lassana or Professor Ko.
Then I can use what I learn to try to improve one of my past websites.
If I get stuck or need feedback I'll email one of my past mentors about it. If I am successful, I will move on to the next lesson. It would be like a self-paced online course over the year.
