Student Toolkit
The student is expected to take the initiative and drive the relationship. The student must be proactive in the process so the student and partnering professional will both get value from participating in the program.
The responsibilities of each participating student are to:
Be proactive: Follow up with your professional as requested. Schedule meetings and be on time.
Prepare ahead of time: Think about the questions you want to ask and the goals you have for the meeting. That way, you’ll use your meeting time effectively.
Use active listening skills: Use active listening skills during discussions to focus on the conversation and clarify understanding.
Maintain respect and confidentiality: To build trust in a professional relationship, maintain confidentiality and show respect for your pairing professional. Act with courtesy and be considerate of your partner’s time.
Share results: Students will leave some meetings with suggestions. Let your partner know what happened as a result of applying the suggestions.
Be open-minded when receiving feedback: It’s difficult to grow productively if you aren’t able to accept feedback and new ideas. Feedback is intended to help people progress in their development. When receiving feedback, ask for specific details to ensure you understand specific behaviors. Seriously consider the feedback and demonstrate you are open to hear ideas and suggestions. Don’t shut out things you’d rather not hear.
Ask questions: The student is responsible for asking the professional for specific guidance and advice on goals and development plans. Ask your partner what you can do between meetings to further your learning.
