UA Conference approved Twelve Steps book and “Big Book"** (also from prior years ToC)
*Please Note the UA Step Writing Guide, while available for use, is not Conference Approved Literature, and cannot be approved unless and until we receive written permission from OA/CEA HOW.
**note the term Big Book was rejected by the UA World Service Conference (2023, 2024 &2025) as unacceptable as a UA Literature Basic Text Book Title and only to be used in reference to the AA Big Book, which is CAL in UA. AT WSC 2025 The Conference voted to name our UA Book of Recovery Stories "Today We Prosper UA"
2026 Topics for Consideration for Literature included a request for “A personal underearning sobriety definition”. While this is not exactly the same thing. We want to share something that already exists in UA Literature from 9thtradition.org Prosposals/Prosperiteam Materials/Introduction. https://9thtradition.org/2016/01/2-prosperiteam-materials/
Please note that in these documents, we use the terms ‘recovery’ and ‘abstinence’ interchangeably. ‘Recovery’ connotes the positive actions we express to combat the disease of underearning. Some believe that the term ‘abstinence’ refers to abstaining from underearning behavior. In UA, we are refraining from certain character defects.
In actuality, we are seeking to accomplish both states of being.
“Recovery and/or abstinence from underearning is taking focused, effective actions to earn, and to refrain from behaviors that undermine those actions, while working towards and maintaining a sustainable income that supports a solvent and dignified life.”
This is something that can be used to explore our own personal understanding of underearning sobriety. We believe that no two underearners are alike. Therefore no two underearners will necessarily have the same definition of personal underearning sobriety. The above definition can be used as a starting point for each member's personal definition.
