While volunteering with the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, planting native trees and shrubs in a remote area of southwest Maui, our project lead heard the distinct call of a Kiwikiu, a remarkable event, as this species does not naturally occur in that part of the island. Seven individuals had been reintroduced there nearly a year and a half earlier, but all were thought to have succumbed to avian malaria shortly afterward. I was able to photograph the lone remaining bird during the rediscovery, documenting that it persisted on the landscape, offering renewed hope for the future of this critically endangered species. Article about the encounter.
