It is the purpose of the CRLA College Reading and Writing SIG to promote a more global understanding of the issues in developmental writing and to promote the advancement of more dynamic strategies for addressing the challenges. It is also our purpose to engage members in discussion of pressing concerns in the field, to examine the multicultural nature of basic writing in graduate programs in rhetoric and composition, and to respond to concerns of all SIG members as they are presented.
The Council of Writing Program Administrators (CWPA) supports and encourages reading scholarship as a critical part of writing program work as outlined in our “WPA Statement on the Five Knowledge Domains of First-Year Composition” (v4, 2026). Additionally, WPA: Writing Program Administration welcomes article-length (up to 7,500 words) empirical and theoretical research on issues related to teaching reading and writing program administration, as well as shorter “Everything Is Praxis” pieces (3,000–5,000 words)—case studies or reflections that focus on the programmatic application of teaching reading.
The Modern Language Association and its members work to strengthen the study and teaching of languages, literatures, and culture. The MLA provides opportunities for its members to share their scholarship and teaching, discuss trends in humanities higher education, and develop professionally at all career stages. The association establishes guidelines for MLA fields and sustains a wide range of professional development programming, including the MAPS Leadership Institute, the ADE-ALD Summer Seminar, the Institutes for Reading and Writing Pedagogy, the Professional Development Hub at the MLA Annual Convention, career-related webinars and workshop series, and more. Publications include Profession and the ADE Bulletin.
The Online Writing Centers Association (OWCA) supports professionals and students who research or implement online writing support, much of which centers on how readers engage with student texts, peer feedback, and digital resources across asynchronous and synchronous environments. OWCA's ongoing Reading Club Series — running through 2026 with installments on Foundations, Practices, Reflections, and a Call to Action — brings members together to discuss scholarship shaping the field, and the association's open-access Scholarship Database offers a searchable archive of work on online writing center practice, including studies relevant to reading instruction, response, and tutor education.
The Two-Year College English Association (TYCA) unites teachers committed to the teaching and study of English in two-year colleges and access-oriented institutions, to advancing the profession, and providing a national voice for two-year colleges and access-oriented institutions in postsecondary education.
