TWMUN 2019 - Chair

Angela Ou

My name is Angela Ou, I will be a senior majoring law at Fu Jen University by winter. I’ve been participating in Model UN conferences since senior high school, and this will be my third time chairing at TWMUN, also the second time chairing UNCSW.

When I’m not busy with my major, I devote myself to advocating for gender equality and women’s rights. Last year, I hosted the first ever “Feminine Week” on our campus. The goal was to encourage everyone to speak on gender-related issues, and also at the same time praising the long-oppressed feminine characters. Through the event, we light sparks in and outside the campus. The impact was surprisingly significant when you start even by just talking about it.

I hope everyone will enjoy the conference and at the same time, we will able to help you learn about women’s situation in different countries.

Peter Yeh

Hi, I’m Peter Yeh, currently a junior in NTHU; I major in Quantitative Finance and minor in Law. This will be my fourth year participating in TWMUN, and it’s a pleasure to be part of the team again.

The first time I get to know about feminism was two years ago, when Lena Yao, who’s also a co-chair of UNCSW, introduced herself as a feminist. Back then, I thought gender issues were just O.K.; the time of gender equality had already come. But as I started to learn more about feminism, I realized how stupid I was, thinking that we've overcome all the inequities. You might think that it’s strange to have a man in a committee talking about women’s rights. But here are some words I hope to pass on, gender issues affect all kinds of gender and often affect us in ways we’re not aware of.

Hope that we could all enjoy ourselves in opening the eyes of gender and come up with great ideas changing the situation that we’ve been oppressed for based on our sex.

Lena Yao

Greetings, delegates! I am Lena Yao from the Humanities and Social Sciences Department of NTHU, and I have the honour of being your co-chair for this conference.

Although this conference will regrettably be my last in Model UN, I cannot be more delighted to round out my adventures with a topic that is and has always been deeply relevant to my own life and, I am sure, to those of each and every one of you.

Gender is a construction so deeply integrated in society that it risks being overlooked in our everyday lives. However, if you’ve ever caught yourself wondering why manufacturers insist on selling different shampoos to men and women, or why tampon adverts would have us believe that women bleed electric blue every month—I am proud to say that you are, in fact, a fledgling feminist and believer in gender-equality. It’s a small step from asking why little girls cannot consist of snips and snails and puppy dog tails to tackling larger issues such as institutional discrimination against a certain sex.

Lastly, please forgive me if, as someone majoring in sociology and gender studies, I simply cannot resist quoting Simone de Beauvoir: “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.” The same, I believe, can definitely be said for men. When it comes to gender, it is never a question of being, but one of becoming; and here in this committee, I sincerely hope we’ll discover ways in which we can allow ourselves and others to become whatever they wish, regardless of what society tells them to be.

Joe Chiang

Greetings, my name is Joe Chiang and will be majoring Arabic language and culture at National Chengchi University starting from September 2019. MUN has become a great focus of my life since senior high school and has never failed to astonish me with the abundance of various point of views. I’ve gained extensive experience in security and human-rights-related topics of discussion through different conferences, which undoubtedly enhance my ability of negotiating, critical thinking and logical reasoning. The significance of Model United Nations is to provide an open platform for those who are willing to speak up for their opinions toward global issues, even though Taiwan is not one of the members of UN, delegates’ voices should be heard and be felt. Since the ultimate goal of Model UN has always been raising awareness on the specific issue that is currently happening around the world, this year’s TWMUN UNCSW is hoping the delegations to form fruitful discussions regarding the topic of strengthening gender equality. Extremely looking forward to the upcoming conference, and hoping all delegations to have a great experience at UNCSW.
