What Is a Lenticular Lens?
A lenticular lens is a sheet made up of many tiny parallel lenses, called lenticules, running across its surface. Each lenticule magnifies a different slice of the printed image depending on your viewing angle. As you tilt the print or move around it, the lenses reveal different slices, and that is what creates the flip, animation or depth. The image underneath is interlaced, which means several pictures are sliced into fine strips and woven together so every lens has its own strip from each picture.
What Does LPI Mean?
LPI stands for lenses per inch, sometimes written as lines per inch. It describes how many lenticules are packed into each inch of the lens. A lower LPI means fewer, larger lenses on a thicker sheet. A higher LPI means more, finer lenses on a thinner sheet. LPI is the most important choice when matching a lens to a job, because it controls both the strength of the effect and the distance from which the print looks its best.
Thicker Lenses (Lower LPI) for 3D and Large Formats
Coarser, lower-LPI lenses produce the strongest sense of depth, which makes them ideal for 3D. Because the effect reads best from a distance, thicker lenses suit large-format work such as posters, point-of-sale displays and signage. The trade-off is that very fine detail is softer, so they are less suited to small text or intricate close-up images.
Thinner Lenses (Higher LPI) for Flip, Animation and Handheld Pieces
Finer, higher-LPI lenses hold much more detail and work best up close, which makes them the right choice for small, handheld items such as business cards, postcards and greeting cards. They suit flip, animation, morph and zoom effects, where crisp transitions matter more than deep 3D. The thinner sheet also sits comfortably on pieces that need to feel like a card rather than a rigid panel.

The two ideas meet in viewing distance. As a rule, the further away a print will be viewed, the lower the LPI it can use, and the closer it will be held, the higher the LPI it needs.
