Happy first week of school!
This is our first post in the new TWB 26-27 group now that school has officially started!
We had a busy first couple of days trying to get new students caught up and getting all of our students into the correct class periods. We are almost there! We had our first stadium rehearsal today and finally getting to see and hear the band in a big venue was awesome! The future is bright!
We are looking forward to seeing everyone for our first performance this evening at Meet the Pirate. Parents are invited to come down at the end and try this whole marching band thing out for a second...and then we have a special surprise for everyone at the very end!
Next week we start our first week of normal school day mornings and Monday night stadium rehearsals. Be here on time and ready to go!! See info below.
Keep scrolling to see updates including next week's schedule and Band Booster news.
Monday 7:00-8:15am, 5:00-7:00PM (Lot/Stadium) Sound Crew/Metronome Helpers at evening and all others this week
Tuesday 7:00-8:15am
Wednesday 7-8:15am
Thursday 7-8:15am
Friday 7-8:30am Full TWB(This rehearsal will include Pre-Game rehearsal at 7:00am)
The most important key to our success as the largest organization at Wylie HS is to have our students with us when we have rehearsals and performances. It takes all of us for all of us to be successful this season.
Calendar management and punctuality are life skills that band is great at developing!
Your own band directors are good at this skill because of their own band directors earlier in their lives. An excerpt from the band handbook is below and the absence request button below will be live starting today.
"Attendance will be taken promptly at the start of each rehearsal in the fundamentals block. Students not in the fundamentals block at the appropriate time will be marked tardy or absent. We realize that from time to time a student cannot avoid missing a marching band practice due to illness or emergency situations (medical emergency or illness, death in the family, or religious holiday). When a student misses a rehearsal or is tardy for a rehearsal for ANY REASON, he/she must communicate with a director before attendance is taken using the absence request form.
REHEARSALS Students are required to attend ALL band rehearsals. The band directors must be notified IN ADVANCE (the day before) if a student is going to miss or be late to a rehearsal. Excused absences are
classified as illness or family emergency only. This information is NOT to be relayed through another student!
Failure to notify the directors of an absence or tardy constitutes an unexcused absence with the possibility of being removed from the next performance. In addition, members may be removed from the performances if rehearsals are missed due to lengthy school absences or excessive tardies. Students should schedule academic tutorials after 8:30 am or after school for the duration of the marching season. Step one to being
great is being here!
TARDIES Consequences for tardies are as follows:
1. Warning.
2. 2nd Warning, parents notified through phone or email
3. Student will be pulled from next performances. A tardy is defined as not being in the block when the band starts rehearsal. There are no exceptions to the “3rd tardy” rule. Once a student has reached the 3rd tardy, they will be pulled from the next performance, and an alternate will march the spot if there is adequate time to learn it. Tardies are the responsibility of the student. The only excused tardies are those involving medical emergencies. After all, you have three chances!
Performances
The student will receive a grade for each performance during a grading period. The band directors and the band calendar will determine the number of performances.
Unexcused absences from rehearsals and performances: Any unexcused absence may result in a zero given as a grade and being pulled from the next performance as a director deems necessary.
Excused absences from a performance: In accordance with WISD policy, all excused absences will be honored with no grade penalty. These will include: Medical emergency or illness, death in the family, and religious holiday.
An alternative assignment will be provided by the band director for those students who
miss a performance with an excused absence. This assignment must be completed and
the grade will be averaged in the place of the missed performance.
Students who are academically ineligible or temporarily suspended from extra-curricular
activities will complete an alternative assignment for each performance missed as well.
Here is the first draft of the crew list. Look out on the weekly announcements in the section below (For example, this week it says "Sound Crew" is called at Monday evening and all other rehearsals this week) each week to know when your crew is "called."
If your name is not on the crew list and you were expecting to be on the list, email Mr. Lisko at stephen.lisko@wylieisd.net
4:20 School ends, students go home, get a bite to eat and change into band dry fit, black shorts, and athletic shoes with short black or white socks.
6:30 Arrive at school for a quick inspection
7:00 Quick warm up in Gym or IMPAC
7:30 Enter stadium and play tunes from the track for the audience
8:30 Meet the Pirate
9:00 Finish!!
Parents, we do a fun thing at the end each year where we will have you come down and march a set with us at the end of the night. Be ready to come down to the field when we finish!
Here are the 9th grade region cuts! Click the link below! For all wind and percussion students- These cuts will be the musical excerpts for your 2nd semester auditions, so start practicing now!
Percussion- Mr. Kosterman is also going to add cuts for 4 mallet and timpani, so you will play excerpts from all four etudes for your spring semester audition.
For all 9th graders- Remember, you can audition for the 9th grade region band. Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony 9th graders- This can also fulfill your region audition requirement (ALL students from Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony must audition for a region band, whether it's 9th grade or the regular region audition, or even both!).
Booster Updates!!
Football season is upon us, which means Concessions time! Concessions is one of our biggest fundraisers and helps us fund our fall programs, including our Luna marching show for both Color Guard and Band. We need both students and parent volunteers. We especially need parent volunteers for the scrimmage tonight. You will be finished in time to watch TWB for Meet the Pirate! Training will be provided for all positions, and they are quite easy jobs. We are hosting Concessions for McMillan JH games on Wednesday, WHS JV games on Thursdays, and Varsity games, mostly on Fridays. Students can only sign up for McMillan and JV games, and you will earn Letter Jacket Service Points. Click the link below to sign up:

Pick up your yard signs, car decals, and purse straps at 6:30 PM on Monday by the band storage area. Didn’t get a chance to pre‑order? No worries — we’ll have all three items for sale, along with Spirit Wear from previous seasons.

If you have any Booster questions, please email Kelli Minarzick at president@thatwylieband.net
Students- It is critical that you have a phone number associated with your Parentsquare profile AND that you have "Instant" notifications set so that your teachers (and band directors) can reach you instantly.
Parents- Please check with your students to see if they have completed these steps:
Follow these steps:
1) Click on your profile in the top right corner of Parentsquare.
2) Click "Manage account."
3) Click "Edit account."
4) Add your student phone number.
5) Go through the verification process by entering the verification code that is sent to your number when prompted.
Now that your phone number is added:
1) Go to "Notification settings."
2) Change your notifications to "Instant" instead of "Digest" (Digest only sends one notification per day at the end of the day- you will miss messages if it is set to "Digest").
As of Thursday evening, we are up to $18,000 raised toward our $80,000 goal. That is a great start; however, only 96 students have participated so far. We need any and all band students to participate by entering contact information of people you think will donate into our fundraiser system. If you need help, or did not receive a link to your specific fundraiser site, then send Mr. Lisko an email (stephen.lisko@wylieisd.net).
The boosters and directors have come up with some great incentives, so check out the graphic and get to work!
99 Pledges Fundraiser Help?
One issue we discovered in classes on Friday is that students did not know how to access their individual management page. This is important because students can input contact information to "invite" people to their pages and in turn, 99 Pledges will send automatic reminders to people who have not donated!
I am attaching a photo from the 99 Pledges FAQ to help explain the issue.
The email was sent to student's apps account addresses and one of the adult emails on August 7th (Among other emails that they may have received from us that day).
There are 2 links in the email. The 2nd link lower in the body of the email will take students to their "Private Profile Management Page." From there, they can edit their own profiles by clicking "Profile" and invite more participants by clicking "Invite."
Every student in TWB must complete the required UIL medical form each year. IN ADDITION, all 9th, 11th, and any new students in other grades that have not had a pre-performance physical must have one done before the start of summer band. Percussion and guard, this must be done before the first day of your July camp.
EVERYONE fills out page 1 with their guardian (Medical History)
9th graders, 11th graders, and any new students in other grades needs a physical examination by a "Physician, a Physician Assistant licensed by a State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners, a Registered Nurse recognized as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the Board of Nurse Examiners, or a Doctor of Chiropractic." (Physical Examination)
When complete, upload your forms to Wylie ISD's RankOne site (Link Below). If you are only completing the medical history, please upload only that one page. Band Directors are unable to accept physical forms. They must be uploaded to this system.

Mouthpieces and ligatures, especially for woodwind instruments, do not last forever.

Summer Health/Heat Stress
It can be tempting to stay inside all summer! We recommend getting outside to acclimatize to the heat prior to the start of Summer Band! This can also be great for someone's mental health. The CDC recommends a gradual build up time outside over the course of 7-14 days, so come up with a plan to do that! Meet up with your band friends for some outside time this summer! Wear sunscreen and drink lots of water.
Football Program Ads
Every year families have the option of purchasing ad space in the home football program to celebrate their students. This is done through the football boosters as a fundraiser. If you are interested, see link below.

TWB is back at it!!
What a week this has been welcoming everyone back and beginning our journey for the year with our whole new crew. Shout out to the freshmen that have joined and have learned so much this first week!!
Because of the nature of our activity hitting the ground running at the beginning of the school year, summer band takes the performers from beginners to pros in a very short time period. It takes a lot...and the kids are giving a lot! There is nothing else like being in a giant group of over 300 performers doing special work every day. Hard...but fun!
We start with our competition show tomorrow morning for the first time and then will welcome everyone back next Friday for Pre Game rehearsal and Water Balloon Palooza 2026 at the end of that rehearsal. Summer band info is all added below from the previous updates.
We can't wait to get everyone out for Meet the Pirate in a few weeks and show you all what we have been doing so far.
Updates below including Band Booster News. Parents, if you have not joined the TWB Parent community yet, you are missing out!!

How Is Your Instrument Working?
Summer is a great time to take your personal instruments to the shop for a quick playing-condition checkup. Instruments tend to need adjustment every few months, especially if the instrument has big pads or long rods that can bend easily even if a student is careful.
It can be tempting to stay inside all summer! We recommend getting outside to acclimatize to the heat prior to the start of Summer Band! This can also be great for someone's mental health. A couple of additions for the summer band blast below.
We missed some of you today for registration gear handout. The last time for pickup will be at 3:00pm, at the end of rehearsal on Monday.
While we only upload one or two forms each year in Rank One, please click and sign all 5 forms that you see in the system as well. That has caught some of our families. If you heard from us, please complete those non-band forms as well.
The time is almost upon us!
Our leadership team had two great days of learning last week and the Guard and Percussion will be starting their camps next week. We are looking forward to seeing everyone for the start of Full Summer Band on July 27th.
There is much information contained in this posting and we suggest reading through all of it and then look back one week at a time to make it easy to stay on top of things. Our summer schedule has a variety of start and end times to avoid as much heat as possible and work around directors’ mandatory trainings.
Please enter each day through door 21, the health science doors, on the Stadium side of the school. For these upcoming summer band days, please dress in light colored clothing, athletic shoes, (flip flops, sandals, crocs are not appropriate), and wear sunscreen! Hats and sunglasses are needed as well. Every student should have their TWB official water bottle each day. We will come inside each day before it really starts to warm up, but we want everyone to be as comfortable and as healthy as possible throughout the morning!!
Suggestion!! In the next week, spend a few minutes outside each day to start to get accustomed to the outside world again…especially if you have been hiding indoors all summer! A 5-minute walk, then 10, then 15 will go a long way in making the morning blocks outside feel like a piece of cake. It is amazing how fast your body can get used to a new environment.
It is imperative that every member plan to be at all rehearsals. Just like other varsity level high-school activities, opportunities in the show will go to those that have been at everything, and therefore better equipped to perform at a high level. And get those physicals and medical forms done…we will send you home if you have not!!
Please read all the way down...much info is included!!
See you soon!

Heads up! The first few events and games while the weather is hot, the band will be performing in new band dry fit shirts, marching shorts, ankle or no-show black or white socks, and athletic shoes. These items will act as our "summer uniform" and were purchased at registration.
And away we go with another amazing year in That Wylie Band!!
See you soon!
Music and Arts TWB Store Info
Every wind player will need the following prior to the start of Summer Band Camp on July 27th:
Flip Folder
Lyre
Tuner/Metronome Single-Use Device
Director-Approved Instrument Supplies
Note: Trumpets and Trombones will use a clip on Flip folder/lyre combination- best brand is DEG.
If you need an easy way to get any of these supplies, Music and Arts set up an online store linked here:
https://www.musicarts.com/school-supplies?studentGrade=9&schoolId=37232
You are certainly welcome to purchase the supplies elsewhere, but this may be a good option for you to order all of these accessories all at once.
The directors believe strongly that the equipment your student uses has a direct affect on the quality of their tone production and ability to play technically. Please check and inspect your student's equipment with them over this summer, and if they need new or upgraded equipment, then please purchase. Mouthpieces and ligatures, especially for woodwind instruments, do not last forever.
We have attached an equipment list if you'd like to purchase the supplies at a different vendor.

July 17, 2026

Happy Continued Summer Break!!
We hope your summer break has continued to be wonderful so far!
Your directors are all back from traveling with their families and spent yesterday starting to get the band hall back together after we moved everything out for the floor project.
We added a few items below including spirit wear, some gear pick-up days in two weeks on July 23 and 24, and this year's locker information.
Trombones, take a look below for an opportunity Dr.Conklin is providing. You should all participate!!
Students, be sure you are practicing and learning your music. Brass in particular, spend some time on double tonguing each day. You will need to be great at this skill for our second movement of our show. See below for details.
A couple of reminders and mentioned below: Have you gotten your pre-performance physical? Have you ordered gear that YOU need for YOU? (flip folder, lyre, tuner, supplies) Have you registered for band and paid fees for the season? (we order required items for you, but you need to pay for those items as we hand them out) Do these things in June and you will not have any emergencies in July!!
Get them while they are hot with delivery planned by Meet the Pirate Night!! Our boosters have created some amazing items for us this year.
Gear Pick Up Days!!
We will be hosting two mornings of item pick up days on July 23 and 24. Try to attend at your selected slot to help with flow, but we can make any of the times work if needed...just be sure to attend!
Thursday July 23rd
8am-Percussion and Guard
9am-10am- 9th and 10th
Friday July 24th
9am-10am 11th and 12th
Registration was all online back in May and some students are fully paid up for the season. Students will need all to have paid at least $450.00 of their May balance by these days in order to be given ordered gear. This level of payment by this date allows us to pay our own invoices, and offers some flexibility for families on supplemental and meal fees for the season.
We will have Presto send updated financial statements shortly and everyone has records of what you have paid in your emails from Presto. Help us stay on top of our financial responsibilities.
Locker Requests
All students should open this form and read through the circumstances of our instrument lockers. Only certain situations will require you to fill out the form below, so read carefully and decide if you need to fill out the form. Mr. Lisko will try to honor your locker requests per your instrument situations. Thanks in advance for opening the form below and reading.

Make Music
Students, you should have received communication from the MakeMusic company with information to sign up and work with the online platform. You will also see music uploaded for you throughout the summer with "assignments" for you to work through. The system listens to you and will grade you when you decide to do an assignment, but in addition, there are many actual tools for practicing and getting better on the music that has been added. We will even add the Fight Song and School Song, if able, as those will be the first two items that must be passed off as memorized when we come back.
On top of all of our material, MakeMusic has thousands of solos and music to explore and play along with. It is a very cool tool for a musician and we have bought you all a subscription for the entire year!!
Assignment due dates are arbitrary, but you DO want to have all of those done by the time we are back in July. We WILL look at those grades when it is time to place performers in spots. Use this new tool and get better this summer!!
Double Tongue Exercises that anyone can do!!
Have some fun with these. Go slow at first and you may adapt them to any scales. See if you can get the "K" syllable to sound as much like the "T" syllable as you can. Keep the "K" as far forward as you can in your mouth and practice just saying it when you are hanging around the house or driving in your car. If you can say it, you can play it! Also, google "Double Tongue exercises" and you can see and hear some great videos online as well.
There are also exercises in Make Music for you...search "double tongue." How good can you get! :)
Drum Corps International will be in town for three shows coming up in Denton on July 16, HEB Pennington Field on July 19, and McKinney on July 20. With three shows now in the area, pick one with your sections, friends, and family and go check it out!
DCI is the highest level around in the marching activity and so much can be gained by attending these amazing performances. Go watch some amazing performers before we get started for the season!!

How Is Your Instrument Working?
Summer is a great time to take your personal instruments to the shop for a quick playing-condition checkup. Instruments tend to need adjustment every few months, especially if the instrument has big pads or long rods that can bend easily even if a student is careful.

Happy Summer Break!!
We hope everyone has had a great start to their summer break so far!
Not a lot of news in the band world yet this summer other than the updates to the band hall are taking shape and we are starting to see some of our repairs coming back. As more instruments come in you will be hearing from us for pick up times.
See below for new posts about section social gatherings this summer, summer tasks that need to be accomplished before camps, and other summer details!
A band that works hard also needs to play hard!! One of the best things about band is that by the time school starts, a new student to Wylie HS knows 325 fellow band students already with shared experiences. Our leadership team has come up with the following events for the summer so far and will be sharing more info within the student groups and chats. Get together and have some fun being TWB members!

Tips for Submitting Quality Surveys
Don’t rush through! Take your time reading each question and emoji label carefully.
Be Honest. We want to know what you genuinely think about the brands you have interacted with in the last 6 months.
Pace Yourself. We recommend doing 5-10 surveys a day. Donate 5-10 minutes of your digital time a day for 7 days this month to make a HUGE impact.
