From Paul Heyer
Happy Friday!!
We are excited to kick off our coming year tomorrow at our first rehearsal and show reveal day for the next season!
There are just a few events still to come and then this amazing year in TWB will be all wrapped up.
We hope to see everyone at our final performance of the year on Tuesday at our Spring Concert.
See all updates for the week below!!
The first time we see all of next year's band will be next Saturday, May 9th, for our first rehearsal for the coming year, parent booster gathering, and show reveal! Please wear casual clothing and athletic shoes(no sandals or slides) and bring a water bottle and your instrument. If you play a marching instrument, we will be getting those to you this week. The schedule for the day will be the following:
8:00am Arrive and head to floor area of the Montgomery Center with instruments.
8:15am Intro to marching
10:00 Playing Sectionals
11:00 Large ensemble rehearsal in Monty
11:30 Show reveal and parent meeting for the 26-27 school year
12:00 Finish!
Parents, we will have a booster hosted social and info event for you in the auxiliary gym starting at 10:15am(aux gym is next to the Monty) and then you will join us in the Monty at 11:30.
If your student lettered this year, then they need to grab a packet from the band hall that has the information in it from the letter jacket company.
The company will be here on Monday, May 11th and Tuesday, May 12th during LUNCH.
Monday and Tuesday during lunch are the ONLY times that letter jackets can be ordered.
Please look over the form in the packet, fill it out as completely as you can, and have a CHECK ready to go to pay for the order. Remember, parents can NOT come in the building to help with checks/payments, so please have a plan for your student to have a pre-filled check with the company's name and amount owed.
If for some reason you think that you will letter after volunteering on Monday and Wednesday for the middle school concerts, then please plan to attend, most likely you will letter.

Senior Parents,
After four years of high school band, the Band Gala signifies the end of an era in That Wylie Band. All are welcome to attend, and we look forward to celebrating our seniors in several meaningful ways.
One special feature of the evening will be a Senior Walk, highlighting pictures of our graduating seniors. We need your help to ensure every senior is represented.
Please create a photo collage for your senior using a foam board no larger than 24” x 36”. The collage may include photos from throughout their journey—age progression, band experiences, and high school memories.
Guidelines:
Use a foam board (black or white preferred; Dollar Tree carries both)
No frames or heavy materials
Decorate as simply or elaborately as you wish
Clearly include your senior’s name on the poster
Place one small hole in the upper left and upper right corners for hanging
(Please keep this area clear to avoid damaging photos)
Posters will be displayed on art display boards during the gala. See examples below.
Please have your student drop off the poster at Mrs. Stone’s office no later than Friday, May 8.
We have 61 seniors graduating this year, and our goal is to have a poster for every senior. At the conclusion of the Band Gala, families may take their senior’s poster home as a keepsake.
Needed:
Decorated poster board or foam board (no frames or heavy materials)
Maximum size: 24" x 36"

We have been approached by a few students who have indicated that they need financial help in order to have a piano accompanist for solo contest. We always encourage students to play solos with piano accompaniment- a live accompanist is a great asset to a student performing a solo. Please consider donating to this worthwhile cause. You can click the link below, and you can also copy the link and send it to anyone who you think may donate. Each performance costs a student $60. Our goal is $1,200, which would provide the opportunity for 20 students to perform a solo!

We had a fun week around here following our band trip to Corpus and the Guard trip to Dayton. All four bands were awarded a first division and the Guard placed 7th at WGI World Championships in a whole new, higher class. Good weekend for all!
The Corpus trip was a blast, and parents...some of your kiddos can cook! We were amazed at some of our students skills in the kitchen. It seems like maybe they should be cooking for you at home. Put them to work! :)
We start leadership training next week and our groups will be continuing to prepare for upcoming recordings and concerts. If your rehearsal time is during any of the leadership workshops, please use this schedule to switch times with another student. Click here to view the schedule by ACCOMPANIST.

We have 63 seniors graduating this year, and our goal is to have a poster for every senior. At the conclusion of the Band Gala, families may take their senior’s poster home as a keepsake.
Needed:
Decorated poster board or foam board (no frames or heavy materials)
Maximum size: 24" x 36"
Turn in to Mrs. Stone by Friday, May 8
Thank you for helping us make this a meaningful celebration for our seniors.

Please register now if you have not already. We need to know how much gear and what sizes to order sooner than later. You do not have to pay now, but we do need your registration. Thanks!
You should have received an email when you completed registration, but if you would like to confirm we received it, here is the list we have.
If you just completed registration, wait a few minutes before checking the above list. It takes about 5 minutes for the computer to update.
If there is anything you do not understand, please ask your director.
Step 1- Complete Registration Form
Step 2- Read the Audition process, and prepare your audition
Step 3- Record your audition, and submit it using the link below
All 2026-2027 TWB Members must complete this form by April 24. We will be ordering the items in the form, and need a count by the end of the month.
There are a few additional items you will need for band class and performances that can be purchased at a music store or online. A document and link for those items will be sent at the end of this semester.
Your audition will be submitted in the form of two videos using the following google form. It should be a live unedited video of your performance uploaded using the form on page 3 by 8:00am on Friday, April 24. Your face and instrument should be visible in the video and you should sit in a chair and use a music stand. You will perform your audition straight-through with pauses only for switching on/off metronome or moving between music selections. To aid in uploading long videos, you will upload TWO separate video LINKS: one link of all of the scales, and one link of the metronome etude and the audition etude. You should record and practice as much as you need to and submit the best unedited version you can perform. You have as many chances as you need to show us your best!
Video 1
Scales- 110 total points
C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, G, & D (10 points each)
Chromatic (20 points)
Video 2
Metronome Etude- 100 total points
Band Audition Etude- 100 total points
Click the button below to download the packet of scales and music for your instrument.
SCALES:
You will perform the chromatic scale and 8 major scales (concert C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, G, D and Chromatic) These scales must be performed by memory at your best tempo in order above. Play all the scales in the octaves indicated on your scale sheets. You may play them at different tempos. Faster scales and full range scale will earn a higher scale
METRONOME AUDITION:
The metronome audition is to be performed on a Concert F, at the indicated tempo. A metronome will be used during your audition for this portion only. You will provide the metronome used in the audition.
BAND AUDITION ETUDE:
You will perform the Band Audition Etudes that are included in this packet. You may perform this etude at any tempo that you feel shows off your ability. Articulation markings should be adhered to and you may add any dynamic contrasts that you feel are appropriate.
ALL STUDENTS WHO AUDITION AND FULFILL THE MINIMUM COMPETENCIES WILL BECOME A MEMBER OF THE WYLIE HS BAND PROGRAM. ALL BAND STUDENTS, REGARDLESS OF GRADE LEVEL OR CONCERT BAND ASSIGNMENT, WILL ALSO PARTICIPATE IN THAT WYLIE BAND DURING MARCHING SEASON.
Step 2- Audition Music Download
Band Tryouts? You mean we have to try-out for High School Band?
Yes! The tryouts are for band class and chair placement. The auditions will help us to (1) assign you to the proper part for marching band music, and (2) place you in the class that best matches your playing skills so that you will be successful and have as much fun as possible.
What if I don't make the Wind Symphony? Do I still get to march?
Yes...Yes...Yes!!! In fact, very few 9th graders do make the Wind Ensemble their first year. Remember, you are moving to a school where some students have been playing 4 years longer than you have! All the band classes at Wylie will work on the same music for marching band. All band classes will rehearse the music during the school day and combine for outdoor marching practice outside the school day. You will have another audition over the all-region music in December that will set bands for the following Spring Semester.
But I'm going to be in athletics? Does that mean I can't take band?
No!!! There shouldn't be any scheduling conflicts with other classes during the day. Those students in athletics and other electives will be able to participate fully in both activities. If you have specific questions about how it will work, talk to Mr. Heuer before you count on what someone else tells you. Each year we have a number of students involved in various activities including football, baseball, track, drill team, tennis, golf, theatre, etc. You may even see some drill team and football uniforms marching at halftime with us throughout the season at games. Most of our students do something else in addition to band.
What do I have to play for tryouts?
Woodwind and Brass players will play scales (concert C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, G, D and Chromatic) and the band audition etudes that you are given. You may play the scales at whatever tempo you need in order to play them well. The “metronome audition” will be performed at the tempo marked. The “Band Audition Etude” can be performed at any tempo you feel is appropriate and that shows us your ability.
Play the chromatic scale in straight sixteenth notes, four to a beat, or in triplets, three to a beat. Feel free to use even more extended ranges. Show us your best.
Don’t hesitate to contact the WHS Band if you have questions.

Happy Friday!!
Our busy time of Spring continues to truck right along.
Our two JV guards had a tremendous end to their winter competitive season last week with a first and second place placement at the North Texas Colorguard Associations championship. Two groups from the same school placing right next to each other is pretty unheard of...Bravo!!
You can see all of our guards at their Celebrate the Arts Performances next Thursday, April 2nd. They are the best around...period! The event starts at 6:00pm in the Montgomery Center.
We have our UIL Concert and Sightreading next week and the groups are sounding amazing. Please join us if you are able to sneak away from work. We would love to have a crowd! Schedules are all listed down below.

Continue practicing all music we have covered in class.
The goal this week is to be able to play all notes and rhythms with a great sound AND be 100% accurate. Go slow. Use a metronome.

The Jazz Band will be performing at the Collin College Jazz Festival on March 28th. We don't know their exact performance time yet; however, we probably will after this weekend. Please come out to support the jazz band that weekend!

Happy Friday!!
We had a great week together progressing in band classes and putting the final touches on chamber music groups for next week's ensemble recital on Wednesday. Parents, please join us on Wednesday evening for this event. It is one of the best times of the year to actually hear your student perform in a small setting.
Tomorrow is a big day for many of our groups performing here in Wylie and we would love students and families to check them all out. First, our perussion have their yearly percussion concert at 2:00pm on Saturday in the Monty. Come see them do their thing on some really different and cool music!
The WHS guards and our Junior guard perform at the Wylie East NTCA contest as well on Saturday. Bring a crowd and make some noise. They are amazing! Junior guard is at 9:14am, JV White is at 10:57, JV Maroon is at 5:30pm, and Varsity is at 8:52pm.
We’re cruising right along with NTCA sign-ups and are closing in on the 50% mark — which means we’re officially in our “look at us go!” era. 🎉
But why stop at halfway? We didn’t come this far to only come this far!
There are still some key spots open — especially in the afternoon/evening. If you’ve been waiting for a sign… this is it. ✨
STUDENTS- need you NHS service hours? This event has been added to the approved list!
Let’s fill these spots and show NTCA what a GREAT contest really looks like!

Well....it looks like another day at home tomorrow! We hope everyone is staying warm, safe, and maybe practicing your instruments a little!? We have lost some time and missed our first concert band clinic guest of the year..but on we go!
See below for the updated plans for the week and information from CJH for a volunteer need this coming Saturday.
Please work through the Verdi and the March if you have not with a metronome and tuner at current tempos from rehearsals and be ready to go on Thursday! Make the un-familiar, familiar!
Thursday:

Friday:
8:00am Full Band with Dr. Tom Shine
Please arrive 15 minutes early, warm-up individually, and be ready to start on time.
We will meet in the Orchestra Room.
Thursday
No Sectional
Extended Class Rehearsal
Friday ***SPECIAL EXTENDED REHEARSAL***
*Dr. Shine clinic in class. Please make every effort to be here.
Please be prepared to play all measures listed in class the day they are listed. You may have additional measures you are working on in other parts of the music, but you MUST have these measures prepared for class. Do the work. Trust each other.
No sectionals will occur this week. We will strategize to get you caught up during our class time.
Continue practicing all music we have covered in class. Try to figure out more of Four Short Festive Dances on your own.
The Cooper Band program needs hard working TWB students to help our solo contest run smoothly. Volunteering at our solo contest will earn credit for service points for those needing service credit for various organizations. You will need to bring a document or log for us to sign to verify your attendance if you would like to earn credit.
You will need to arrive at Cooper JH (park in the back and enter through the cafeteria) on January 31 at the time of your shift, report to the Cooper Band Hall and find Mr. Powell or Mrs. Smith for your assignment.
We have morning and afternoon shifts available and you will serve as one of the following: outside monitor for a solo room (checking in performers), monitoring the cafeteria (letting students and parents in the building and answering questions) or monitoring the warm-up area (making sure students are warming up and behaving properly).
There is an overlap between shifts so that the morning students may show the afternoon students what to do and to make that transition go smoothly.
Please review the available slots by clicking on the link to sign-up.

Happy New Year
We had a great week getting back into the swing of things and we are busy starting all of our second semester projects for all of the kids across the program. It is going to be a great season of performances for all our our ensembles.
Next week we will see our 8th graders for the side by side concert on Tuesday as well as all groups starting small ensemble and sectional rehearsals in the mornings. While not nearly as busy as marching season, students will start to have some outside-of-school responsibilities added back onto their plates as concert season really ramps up. See below.
Hey Band, Guard, and Parents!
We need your help! (both parents and students)
The Boosters are holding a silent auction this year for Guard. We are looking for donated items that can be used for our silent auction. This Saturday we will be meeting to venture out in our town to ask for donations. We will be splitting into groups (so you won’t have to go alone), and you will be given simple instructions that will make it easy to help. The more people we have, the more places we can ask, the more donations we will find! Wylie loves to help our program; we just have to ask!! Here are the details:
What: Requesting Auction Items
When: 3pm Saturday (plan to be out for a couple hours)
Where: Band Hall at 3pm for instructions and then around town in Wylie, Sachse, & Murphy.
RSVP: Like the post in the band ap to show us you are coming.
Contact Tiffani Makahilahila or Sarah Quartel through the band ap if you have questions. Can’t make it Saturday but still want to help? Information will be posted in the band ap after Saturday’s event with details.

The Wylie HS Band will be traveling to Corpus Christi, Texas to participate in the Southcoast Music Festival. The students will perform in concert for 3 nationally recognized music adjudicators. Bands will receive ratings and comments from their performances, as well as possibilities for accolades for each performing group. This will be a fun and educational event.
The “Corpus Spring Band Trip” is a classic Texas High School band experience that has been going on for over 40 years and offers an inexpensive get away for band programs. While some trips are full of events after events for the students, this trip offers a more relaxing pace and the opportunity for the students to have much needed downtime together.
Remember that as a member of the WHS Band, all students are expected to participate in activities with the band. Attendance is encouraged from ALL students. Let's all work together to make this a fabulous trip. We want and need all of you there for this trip to be a success and for the bands to have all their members present. This is not a band trip without the band!
The price of the trip is approximately $495. This price includes charter bus to Corpus and transportation while on the trip, condo accommodations on the beach for three nights, festival performance package, and a ticket to Texas State Aquarium with their new expanded areas. The price has the potential to go down based on how many students sign up and how many buses are needed.
Below you will find the basic information for the trip, the rules and regulations for student conduct, and a trip contract. We ask that you please read this information carefully to understand what is expected of each student.
Please sign this form on Parent Square as soon as possible so we may plan and know that this trip will be viable. The first payment is not due until October 31 by design to help with balancing payment for this trip and the fall BOA trip…but we DO need to know how many to expect before that date.

At Friday's (9/19/25) game, you will wear your shako hat for the first time. In order to wear your shako, your hair needs to be done in a way that fits into the hat. If your hair is long enough to touch your ears, then you need a plan to do this. Please see the videos and have products that you need to do it for Friday (gel, bobbypins, hair ties, etc.). If you have questions, ask older members with longer hair what they do. See the videos below for a quick tutorial.

What a great week of learning and getting better at what we do. We look forward to a fun performance tonight at Meet the Pirate! Parents, come down and join us at the end!
We still have a few weeks until our first football game in which TWB will perform the Pre-Game show at Halftime.
"Pass Offs" of music and marching have started and you should be hearing and seeing your students practicing at home on their next assignments. These pass offs will be their major grades this term for their class periods.
Schedule for Next Week!!

Sound Crew is with us every day. Prop Crew and TWB will not rehearse this week outside of class.
We have just a few weeks left for our annual fundraiser. Our goal this year is $80,000, and we need EVERYONE to help.
Students should have received an invite through 99Pledges to get started. We want everyone to enter at least 10 contacts and raise $275 each to meet our goal.
We have learned over the years our community loves supporting young people doing worth-while things with their time . . . TWB is one of those things!
Right now, we have only 65% of our band families participating in the fundraiser. We need 100% of you to help us with this huge goal!
If you didn't receive the link or need help getting started, please ask Mr. Schroeder.
Donations can also be made by posting this link on your social media pages https://app.99pledges.com/fund/twbmarch2025

Congratulations!
We have met the first part of our fundraising goal of $40,000 which is almost enough to pay for the buses to San Antonio for Bands of America!
What does that mean? We are half way to our goal of $80,000. The next $40,000 goes to
-Financial aid for private lessons (grades 6-12)
-Senior Scholarships for college
-Band camp scholarships (grades 6-11)
And much, much more.
Thank you for your had work thus far. Please continue to enter contacts and post on social media! If you haven't entered your 10 contacts yet, please do that now!
-Mr. Schroeder
If you are in a Fall School Sport or ROTC, please fill out this form immediately. We need this information for Meet the Pirate and coordinating rehearsal and performance schedules. As always, please communicate about potential conflicts early and often.
Thanks!
If you ordered a TWB Polo or TWB Khaki Shorts at registration and need to adjust your size for either item, please do the following:
1. Check with your friends and swap sizes. Often you can solve these size issues on your own without involving us.
2. If that does not work, please fill out this form by the end of Tuesday, August 12.
Polo and Khaki Shorts Size Adjustment Form https://forms.gle/uhMyMYmf7scr3U1Y8
*We will be handling other registration items adjustments later.
We hope your first short week of school was productive! We are so proud of what everyone was able to accomplish in our summer band days. We really are off to a great start and are just a week away from our first public performances.
Our district is funneling all school communication through the parent square app as a one stop shop for all school information. As everyone knows, TWB has been using the Band App to great success, and it has proven to be a great way to support each other when questions arise both on the student and parent side of communication. We are going to still allow our students and parents to gather in the Band App, but director communication, both to and from, will be from other sources. Please do not reach out to directors through the Band App.
Communication through parent square, both to and from directors will be the main communication from TWB. You will also see emails from our fine arts approved organization format, Presto, from time to time. We generally use this to communicate to set groups of students across sections and groupings that do not correspond with the gradebook. Presto is also where all band financial records are kept and can be viewed at any time.
Attendance Policy for TWB: The number one key to the success of any organization is to have its members present when the group is meeting. Absences not only affect the individual missing the event, but in a group like ours, absences also affect the performers around you that rely on your contribution to perform consistently.
We have had some students in and out over the course of summer band, but with the school year officially starting, we will start adhering to the official attendance policy as you see in our band handbook and listed below.
REHEARSALS Students are required to attend ALL band rehearsals. The band directors must be notified IN ADVANCE (the day before) if a student is going to miss or be late to a rehearsal. Excused absences are classified as illness or family emergency only. This information is NOT to be relayed through another student. Failure to notify the directors of an absence or tardy constitutes an unexcused absence with the possibility of being removed from the next performance. In addition, members may be removed from the performances if rehearsals are missed due to lengthy school absences or excessive tardies. Students should schedule academic tutorials after 8:30 am or after school for the duration of the marching season. Step one to being great is being here!
TARDIES Consequences for tardies are as follows:
1. Warning.
2. 2nd Warning, parents notified by phone or email
3. Student will be pulled from next performances. A tardy is defined as not being in the block when the band starts rehearsal. There are no exceptions to the “3rd tardy” rule. Once a student has reached the 3rd tardy, they will be pulled from the next performance, and an alternate will march the spot if there is adequate time to learn it. Tardies are the responsibility of the student. The only excused tardies are those involving medical emergencies. After all, you have three chances!
Performances
The student will receive a grade for each performance during a grading period. The band directors and band calendar will determine the number of performances.
Excused absences from a performance. In accordance with WISD policy, all excused absences will be honored with no grade penalty.
These will include: Medical emergency or illness, death in the family, and religious holiday.
An alternative assignment will be provided by the band director for those students who
miss a performance with an excused absence. This assignment must be completed and
the grade will be averaged in the place of the missed performance.
Students who are academically ineligible or temporarily suspended from extra-curricular
activities will complete an alternative assignment for each performance missed as well.
Please use this form to communicate absence requests to directors. Submitting this form does not secure an approved absence but serves as the communication of an absence.

We will cover beginning of year information and then rehearse for the remainder of the class periods. (Competition Battery plays at Smith Elementary…see email from Mr. Kosterman)
Friday: 7:00am-8:30am TWB rehearsal for all. We will wake up the Pre Game show and may have time to at least touch the Competition show before we end. Please dress appropriately for rehearsal and you will have time to change before school. Be on the grid ready to go at 7:00am as you did for summer band! Solid white shirt for all for Friday TWB rehearsals.
Saturday: 7-9:30am Competition Band rehearsal. We have shortened this rehearsal for wind players as a region meeting has been placed on the director’s calendars across town. At 9:30, Percussion will move indoors and rehearse until 11:00am. Guard will continue on the grid until 11:00.
Have a great first few days TWB!!
TWB Family,
We have had another great week and will finish with the full TWB tomorrow for a short rehearsal from 7-8:15am followed by the yearly end of camp water balloon battle!!
Click on the post for competition assignments and you will find the roster for the competition group for this year. Over the past weeks of summer band, we have been evaluating all of our performers in order to choose the limited spots for our show. If you are listed as an alternate, you will be sharing a spot for the time being as the show develops. If you are listed as crew, you will be able to choose which team you would like to assist.
ALL MEMBERS of TWB will perform on the field for our first game for halftime and at every home game for Pre Game. ALL MEMBERS of TWB will have a roll of some kind on prop crew or sound crew and will travel to all contests and all will be with us on the field at the Alamo Dome at the end of our season!!
If your name is listed with a spot or an alternate, you will attend all band rehearsals for the remainder of the season including our first Competition rehearsal on Saturday.
Crew students will have a more limited rehearsal schedule once school starts that will be communicated by week as the show progresses and there are needs.
Great work everyone getting started this year as we move into the next phase of our marching season!!
What a week, TWB Band Family!
Our students have come so far so fast, and we could not be prouder! We hope their excitement is making it home to you even after some long days. It really is miraculous how far they have come in such a short period of time.
We will continue next week with our summer band schedule. We have one change to the schedule that will give some students an extra morning off. Tuesday morning, with an earlier start to convocation, we will have Wind Symphony and Drumline only here on Tuesday morning and see everyone else that night for the evening block.
See next week’s schedule below!!
