Following the "From the River to the Sea, Resistance will never cease—Taiwan Stands with Palestine" rally held by the Taiwan Alliance for a Free Palestine on October 13th, we have witnessed a large-scale defamation campaign targeting Taiwan’s local movement supporting Palestinian human rights on social media (particularly on Threads). These baseless accusations have spread at an alarming rate, with some co-signing organizations that participated in the event being subjected to online harassment and intentionally and maliciously labeled as affiliated with the Communist Youth League.
We call for rational discussion and demand that those spreading false information immediately cease their actions.
We invite all those concerned with human rights and rational dialogue to critically and diversely read available information, and not surrender their intellectual freedom out of fear of cognitive warfare.
False claims were circulated after the march, alleging that the event was co-organized by the "Chinese National Socialist Labor Party" and accusing Taiwan Obasang Political Equality Party who joined the march to support Palestine women and children of being accomplices of that entity.
This is patently untrue. First, Taiwan Alliance for a Free Palestine has no ties to any government, let alone cooperation with one. We are a grassroots volunteer network, largely ignored by mainstream media and Taiwan’s government, even as we organize several press conferences and marches attended by thousands. Fortunately, the number of participants has multiplied since our first march, and we sincerely hope that increasing Taiwanese people will join us in supporting human rights and opposing war.
Taiwan Alliance for a Free Palestine consists of organizations such as TIWA (Taiwan International Workers’ Association), Taiwan Association for Human Rights, Taiwan-Palestine Action Front, Taiwan-Palestine Solidarity Network, and Parallel Government. There is no connection to the so-called "Chinese National Socialist Labor Party".
It is deeply regrettable that, at a time when we should be focusing all our energy on human rights actions calling for a ceasefire amidst one of the largest genocides of this century, we are forced to respond to these malicious online attacks.
As this statement is issued, countless Palestinians are still dying at the hands of Israel’s superior weaponry. Israel's acts of ethnic cleansing have been acknowledged by the United Nations. Various UN bodies, including the General Assembly, Security Council, International Court of Justice, UNHCR, UN Women, and UNICEF, have all, over the past year, issued resolutions or judgments condemning Israel's war on Gaza. Since October 7 of last year, increasing governments have reversed their previous stances, condemning Israel for undermining international order and committing atrocities. Recently, Israel has banned the UN Secretary-General from entering the country and attacked UN peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon, prompting strong condemnation from Italy and France.
If, in the face of such heinous violations of international humanitarian law, human rights law, and the laws of war, groups and individuals in Taiwan who march must endure false accusations or even doxxing, what we are truly witnessing is the abuse of Taiwan’s freedom of speech to undermine democratic discourse.
Since its inception in April 2024, Taiwan Alliance for a Free Palestine has upheld human rights and anti-war values as the core of its actions. We have engaged in open dialogue with various sectors of society around four key demands, gaining the support of more than 60 Taiwanese civil society organizations. These organizations span diverse issues, including environmental protection, human rights, parenting education, religion, Indigenous rights, labor rights, left-wing activism, migrant workers, disabilities, and student movements, transcending traditional political divides with a super wide political spectrum. Our collective demands include:
Legislators should uphold Taiwan's human rights values. They should also demonstrate a human rights stance by withdrawing from or opposing the "Taiwan-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Association."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs should halt assistance to Israel and instead provide humanitarian aid to Palestine, including food, medical supplies, and education.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs should publicly disclose Taiwan’s trade records involving Israel’s arms manufacturing, ban the provision of funds, raw materials, components, key technologies, and talent that support Israeli arms production, and stop collaborating with Israeli arms companies on weapon development.
The Taiwanese government should uphold its commitment to transitional justice and human rights, ensuring Taiwan does not become complicit in genocide.
Like solidarity movements for Palestine around the world, we mourn the over 40,000 Palestinian women, children, journalists, medical personnel, and humanitarian workers killed or injured in Israeli attacks. For them, we will continue to demand an immediate ceasefire by Israel and monitor Taiwan’s political and commercial relations with Israel.
In the past six months, Taiwan Alliance for a Free Palestine has consistently voiced Taiwan’s civil society’s concern over the genocide and humanitarian crisis in Palestine through joint statements, press conferences, marches, meetings with civil society organizations, and formal letters to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Unfortunately, we have yet to receive any response from the government.
We will not be deterred by defamation or false accusations. We will continue to march, to speak, and to use civil action to pressure our government to uphold its humanitarian and human rights obligations, to follow the UN’s resolutions calling for an Israeli ceasefire, and to align with the growing international momentum calling for sanctions and the suspension of arms sales to Israel. Taiwan must cease political and commercial cooperation with Israel. Taiwan civil society refuse to see our country be complicit in this genocide.
This is the free will of free people, rooted in our conscience, and it is our duty. Although this human rights and anti-war civil action has been relentlessly smeared by extreme and unfounded accusations, we believe that the international movement supporting Palestinian human rights must, and will, transcend politics. The fear of war should foster empathy for the oppressed and unite us with them: "Ceasefire in Israel now!" and "Taiwan must not be complicit in genocide!"
