Director of Bands
Nick Kornegay is the Director of Bands at R. L. Turner High School. Before teaching at R.L. Turner, Mr. Kornegay taught at Newman Smith HS where he was the Associate Director of Bands and taught for 15 years at Wills Point ISD. Mr. Kornegay’s bands have consistently earned Superior ratings at UIL Concert/Sightreading contests and have several appearances at the UIL State Marching Contest. He is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association and the Texas Bandmasters Association.
Prior to teaching, Mr. Kornegay attended the University of Texas at Arlington, where he performed as principal tuba in the Wind Ensemble and studied under Ed Jones and the late Mark Wolfe. He also performed with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps in 2004 and 2005.
Nick is happily married to his wife Jillian, who is a 5th grade math teacher. Together they have five children.
Associate Director of Bands
Mauricio Orellana is excited to join the R.L. Turner Lion Band as an Assistant Band Director in his second year of teaching.
Before coming to Turner High School, Mr. Orellana served as an Assistant Band Director at Crystal City High School, where he also directed the jazz band. He completed his student teaching at Creekview High School and Blalack Middle School in the spring of 2024.
Mr. Orellana earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education with a concentration in clarinet from the University of North Texas in the spring of 2024.
He is thrilled to be part of the Turner HS Band Program and looks forward to working alongside the students and staff to continue building a tradition of excellence.
Director of Percussion
Josh Dominguez has served as the Director of Percussion for the RL Turner High School Band since 2016, coordinating all marching and concert percussion activities. Prior to RL Turner, he taught at Lubbock High School in Lubbock, TX, as the Director of Percussion and Assistant Band Director, where his band earned a sweepstakes at the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas, where he performed with the Percussion Players under Christopher Deane and the 2 o’clock Steel Band under Mark Ford, appearing at PASIC with both groups in 2012. He was also a member of the UNT Symphony Orchestra under David Itkin and marched snare drum with the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps in 2012 and 2013. During this time, he worked with various schools throughout the DFW area.
Mr. Dominguez has arranged percussion for programs in the DFW and Lubbock areas and is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association and Percussive Arts Society. Outside of music, he likes skateboarding, food and coffee, and lives in Frisco with his wife, Kaleen, their son, Joseph, and their dog, Olive.
Director of Color Guard
Brayden Mittag has served as the Director of Color Guard for the RL Turner Guard since 2024, managing marching and winter guard competitions. Prior to being at RL Turner High School, he served as the Color Guard Technician at Creekview High School.
Mr. Mittag is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics at the University of North Texas, with included studies of dance and choreography. He currently plans on pursuing a PhD in Experimental Physics following the completion of his undergraduate degree.
During his time at UNT, he has performed with the TEXAS The Musical cast in Canyon Texas as a featured dancer. He served as a dance instructor for TEXAS The Musical during his performance season.
Mr. Mittag is excited to continue his journey with the RL Turner Band Program and looks forward to creating memorable experiences for RL Turner Band students and staff.
