1) Students are more engaged
In a deskless classroom, it is much more difficult to “hide.” Students can no longer tune out, shut down, look at their phone or fall asleep.
2) Classroom feels more open, and it allows for more flexibility and creativity
With desks gone, there is SPACE. We have more room for movement and fun activities. We also have room for creative activities that utilize a lot of floor space.
3) Writing activities can still occur
I have clipboards for writing. During assessment week, I bring the tables out and rearrange them so that students can have a tabletop for longer writing opportunities.
4) Emphasis is placed on listening - not on taking notes or completing worksheets
Listening is the most powerful way a person can acquire a second or third language. Without the desks, we can do more activities that focus on listening and provide the repeated exposure to the language that students need.
