Volunteering with us is super easy, and entirely flexible around your schedule. Sign up for a shift below whenever you're available, and look out for a message from your shift leader on the day to confirm it's going ahead!
When are the shifts, and how long do they last?
Shifts typically begin outside the main entrance of Exeter College, around 6.15pm. You can always contact your shift leader if you need to change this - timings can be flexible. They tend to last between 1-2 hours, depending on how many people you see, and how long you chat to them for.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Nope! All supplies and bags are provided by the society, and your shift leader will purchase anything extra from Tesco at the beginning of the shift (and will be reimbursed by the society).
How many shifts do I have to do?
As many as you'd like! Some volunteers do a shift every week; others only have time for one or two a term. Sign up for any you can do, but don't feel pressure to commit to more than you have time for.
Are there ever any health or safety concerns?
Usually, no - Â your shift leader will judge the situation to assess whether to approach someone or not. We exclusively run shifts with minimum three volunteers, for safety.
There are rare occasions when we interact with individuals who become verbally aggressive, sometimes under the influence of alcohol or drugs, in which case we always put safety first and leave the situation quickly.
The vast majority of people we speak to are absolutely lovely and appreciative of what we do!
