It's important to have a good embouchure to play the flute in tune. Here are the steps:
1) Position your head as if nodding, "okay."
2) Place the embouchure hole on the head joint in the dimple of your chin, with the hole facing up. Your bottom lip should cover only a quarter to a third of the hole.
3) Whisper "pooh" to slightly pout your bottom lip and pull the corners of your mouth forward. Keep your lip corners firm and avoid smiling. Direct your air stream towards the back wall of the embouchure hole, with half of the air going into the hole and half across it.
4) Another way to form the embouchure is to say and hold "WHEE" to slightly flatten your lower lip. While holding "WHEE," say "TOO" to bring the corners of your lips forward and down.
Even with a good embouchure, proper posture, and a well-tuned instrument, certain notes on the flute may still be out of tune. The notes that tend to be the most problematic can vary between different flutes, but the following are commonly affected.
Here are some solutions to help with difficult notes when playing the flute. The standard fingering is shown in black, and any alternative fingering is shown in green. If there is a red key, remove it from the standard fingering. Don't forget to include all red keys if playing the standard fingering.
