Zoom training during Covid Lockdown
Tsuru Budo-Kan was founded in 2021 by Shihan Keith Hammett 8th Dan Kyoshi. Sensei Hammett chose the name for the club because in Japan the crane - tsuru - symbolises longevity, good fortune & fidelity and is a symbol for peace and hope. Sensei Hammett has been training and teaching locally for over 40 years.
Following the dissolution of the Yodokan Budo Association after the Budokan Abercarn was sadly closed, Sensei Hammett opened a new dojo to teach Budo - Karate, Jujitsu, Iaido & Iaijutsu.
Sensei Hammett is fully insured including public liability with MartialGuard Instructors insurance and individual members are licensed by Martins Martial Arts.
Tsuru Budo-kan Dojo is Treowen Village Hall, Newbridge where the club has been since May 2021 following the re-opening from Covid lockdown. During the lockdown training was carried out via Zoom meetings online.

He taught and practiced at Newbridge Karate Club which started in 1983 on the first day that Newbridge Leisure Centre was open and for over twenty years thereafter, as well as in Oakdale Comprehensive and Cwmcarn Comprehensive Schools.
Sensei Hammett has participated in numerous Martial Arts courses and seminars over the last 40 years including one of the first UK multi arts demonstrations in London held by the Budo Council, where many now well-known martial artists showed their skills.

BUDO COURSE ABERCARN
Budokan Yudansha with visiting Sensei Tudor Box Hanshi and Sensei Mike Selvey Kyoshi
In 2002 Budo-kan Abercarn was opened and eventually all training was moved to this new Dojo with its permanent tatami. Until 2020 The Rechabite Hall, Gwyddon Road, Abercarn was Honbu Dojo Budokan.
The Budokan saw regular classes for adults in Karate-do, Jujitsu, Iaido and Judo throughout the week and also for children in Karate-do & Judo and a Saturday morning 'Kids Club'.
The club and its members belonged at first to Tokushima Budo Council International (TBCI) and Shoto-Rei-Karate-Kai and were fortunate that Hanshi Tudor Box was a regular visitor and teacher at the Dojo, as well as Hanshi Leighton Jenkins teaching Judo.
Several TBCI senior Sensei including Sensei Paddy Swallow & Sensei Derek Joyce also visited to take Judo courses and assist in gradings. Sensei Francis Sanderson (TBCI) and Sensei Lorna Rousen (Samurai Judo) also taught at the Judo club to help after Hanshi Jenkins was no longer able.
In October 2006 the Yodokan Budo Association was formed to oversee the Budokan Abercarn as well as Shihan Mike Selvey's Tenshin Ryu Dojos - Tsunami Yodokan, Tenshin Yodokan, Kyushin Yodokan, Tengu Yodokan. They were joined by Hanshi Tony Blake with Yamabushi Yodokan Judo Dojo.
During the following years Shihan Selvey brought some of his senior grades to Abercarn several times, including Sensei Geoff Murray & Sensei Richard Jones who were originally from Hanshi Box's Yokohama Tenshin Ryu in Bromley to teach Iaido, along with his club members who all undertook Misogi waterfall training in the cold welsh valley winter.
There were courses several time a year with a number of guest instructors including Hanshi Bruce Scrivens (Iaido), Sensei Steve Fyffe (Aikido & cane), Sensei Byron Meek (Aikido), Hanshi Tony Blake (Judo), Sensei Matthew Cordwell & Sensei Brian Cordwell (Judo).
The club, as well as supporting the Royal British Legion, also undertook an annual charity event, raising money for a number of causes including the Noah's Ark appeal for the Children's Hospital, Jeans for Genes and Latch for children's leukemia.
The Kamiza was hand-made by Hanshi Leighton Jenkins especially for the Abercarn Budokan Dojo. It contained a drawing of the past masters of Karatedo, Judo & Aikido plus, after their passing, photographs of Kancho Bates (TBCI), Hanshi Jenkins and Hanshi Box.
The Abercarn judo club which opened in 1955, was in the old basement under Victoria Buildings. The club needed a mat to practice on but could not afford to purchase one, so Leighton, a carpenter by trade, had the idea of using wood shavings from a wood planer, which he collected weekly from his employer and the club then purchased covering canvas from the sail makers in Newport. Gunji Kiosumi who was the head of the British Judo Association (BJA), put up a cup for competition in Wales and Abercarn Judo Club were the first to win. The cup was presented by Sensei Kiosumi himself at a display in Cardiff. Sadly the club eventually folded as there was not enough local interest, but during the next 50 years Leighton Jenkins continued teaching locally, all over the United Kingdom and in Europe as one of the founder members and Chairman of the Tokushima Budo Council International.
Leighton was honoured to have his 7th Dan (Shichidan) and title Kyoshi awarded to him by Dr Hiroyuki Tesshin Hamada, 9th Dan Hanshi on 18th May 1995 when the first ever Martial Arts Seminar was held in UK by the Greater Japan Martial Virtues Society (Dai Nippon Butoku Kai) International Division. The rank of 8th Dan (Hachidan) and title Hanshi was awarded to him by Kancho Alfred Bates of TBCI.
Hanshi Jenkins himself taught the judo class at the Budokan while he was able, and was very proud when the club members came back with medals from the Tokushima Budo Council International GB Judo competition and Andy Bentley tournament.
He was also part of the Abercarn branch of the Royal British Legion and the club put on events to raise money for the RBL and presented a wreath at the Cenotaph every year as a mark of respect and gratitude. After his passing, the club continued to support RBL and Poppy Day and present to this day a wreath annually on Remembrance Sunday.
