What is Aikido?

Aikido is a relatively new martial art founded by MoriheiUeshiba (1963-1883). It is based on ancient Japanesemartial arts such as Dito-ryu, Jujutsu, and JapaneseSword martial arts (Kenjutsu). Aikido does not opposean opponent's attack. Use the opponent's power toperform throwing or stabilizing techniques. Aikidotechniques are sometimes dangerous to be used in realfighting. Therefore, there is no competition in Aikido, nor struggle to win or lose. Basically Aikido techniquesare used for training or demonstrations. The fact thatAikido does not require much power, has made it popular martial art. As anyone can easily start it. Recently, Aikido has become popular among women and children. As a method of self-defense. Aikido techniques includephysical techniques and weapons (sword, stick, anddagger). Meanwhile, Aikido is one of the mostcomprehensive martial arts considered for hand-to-handcombat, or fight off multiple opponents. However, mostof the trainers teach only physical techniques, but weapons. But in our courses, physical and weapontechniques are trained at the same time. We believe thatthe basic physical skills in Aikido are tightly related tothe use of the balance of the body in weapon techniques, especially in sword techniques.

• The good sides of Aikido

1. Aikido is less harmful than other martial arts

In Aikido, there is no challenging power with theopponent. There is no match to win or lose.  The mainbasis of exercises in our course is not to injure nor be harmed. Therefore first, we practice the main form of thetechniques a lot. Then practice the adaptation of thetechniques at a low speed. After gaining the necessaryskills, we gradually perform the techniques faster.

2. Aikido improves the body's balance and flexibility

In Aikido, all techniques are performed symmetrically, That means we perform the same techniques right andleft hands. Hence the general balance of the body is developed at the same time.

Along with teaching the techniques, we also learn how todefend and prevent injury to ourselves by the fallingtechnique (Ukemi). These exercises are very effective in softening the joints.

3. Learn humility and etiquette with Aikido

Aikido is a martial art that emphasizes the decency

Traning begins and ends with greeting and respect. Respect for the teacher, the place of practice, otherstudents, Greeting each other while repeating a singletechnique is one of the main principles. Aikido is a greatway of life.
