Tournaments are free to enter! (For previous tournaments, results are at the bottom of the page)
On Oahu, for the latest dates/times of tournaments at "4 stops" Ala Moana, be sure to join their Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/289567588410085/
For discussion/questions, ask in the #silph_league_arena_lobby channel in the Hawaii PoGo! discord: https://discord.gg/yK9B3T9
There's also an all-Hawaii online PvP group that's formed.
You may enter one or all!
NB (May update): You may enter as many "Cup" events per month as you want, but the first Cup event where you complete the tournament will determine the vast majority of your standing/points/rank for that month if you leave the checkbox checked for full ranking for all tournaments. (For more control over weighting for advanced players, you can check/uncheck the box before starting a tournament (although, once elected, the decision can't be changed)
(NB: April 2019/mid-season change. Previously, we had been informed that only one Cup's points would count for an individual in a month).
In addition to the themed Cups, other PvP events called "ranked tournaments" may also be held by communities (still would have to abide by Silph Arena rules like being Great League, etc., but without a restriction on types), which would give you a bump in points, but are worth much, much less than the person's first-completed monthly "Cup" tournament.
High scorers who have a Travelers Card would be invited to compete at Regionals in May (NB: this is an April 2019 update; we had originally been told regionals would be in June/July, but they had to adjust for GO Fest being moved up to June from July).
Regional high scorers/winners who have a Travelers Card may be invited to the world finals in July/August at GO Fests.

Kona:
Tentative
In January through July/August 2019, Silph Road is hosting its first tournament season through its Silph League members.
Silph League Arena has one set of rules for this, its first season (e.g., only Great League matches (i.e., Pokemon of no more than 1500 CP), participants must register a set of 6 Pokemon before an event and only use combinations of those 6 throughout a Cup event; each match with an opponent is best 2 of 3; in case of a dispute, screen recordings will be reviewed (no recordings=draw) (no recording, no ruling); Swiss-style matchups; 3-7 rounds per event depending on the number of participants---but every player plays every round, so do not plan on leaving early!)
There may be rule changes/additions as the Cup matures. For instance, one new rule starting in February, is that you may only use one Pokemon of a species type on your team (i.e., no two Muks...but you could have Alolan Muk and Muk, or Muk and Grimer)
Monthly Cup
Each month, local "Cup" events will be held all over the world.
Each Cup event will adhere to a monthly theme (e.g., Water-type Pokemon, Green Pokemon, etc.)
You may participate in as many Cup events per month as you want, but only the first will count toward your global standing.
Non-Cup/Ranked events
Communities may also host some "Ranked" events that may follow rule variations, but still count toward your point total; however, Cup events contribute much more weight to your total points than non-Cup events.
Regionals
Local participants with the most points, get invited to a local regional (end of June/early July)
Regional winners can be invited with their team to world at GO Fest/Dortmund Safari Zone in July/August
How long should I expect to stay at a Cup event?
Tournaments are non-elimination, so you would need to stay for every round if you choose to sign up. The number of rounds depends on the number of participants: the smallest 8-person tournament would have 3 rounds and take about 45 minutes; a large 17-32 person tournament might need 5 rounds and more like 90-110 minutes.
What are the themes for the Cups?
Themes are planned to be released 1-2 weeks before the next month.
January 2019: Boulder Cup (only Steel, Fighting, Rock, and Ground types allowed)
February 2019: Twilight Cup (only Pokemon with at least one of the following types may be used: Ghost, Poison, Fairy, or Dark. No more than one of the same Pokemon)
March 2019: Tempest Cup
April 2019: Kingdom Cup (Dragon, Ice, Steel, Fighting, No more than one of the same Pokemon)
May 2019: Nightmare Cup (Psychic, Dark, Fighting. No Medicham, Sableye, or Legendary/Mythical, and no more than one of the same Pokemon)
Regionals 2019: Pokemon with at least one typing of: Ground, Rock, Steel, Fighting, Dark, Poison, Fairy, Ghost, Ice, Electric, Flying, Fire, or Dragon
June 2019: Rainbow Cup
July 2019: Jungle Cup
How do I plan my team?
For discussion/questions, ask in the #silph_league_arena_lobby channel in the Hawaii PoGo! discord: https://discord.gg/yK9B3T9
Reputable sites like Gamepress and Pokebattler do analyses of recommended types for each Cup. Some Pokemon Youtubers like TrainerTips are also supporters of the Cup and will probably do an episode on the month's Cup.
How does a Tournament work?
Although it's not required, it's strongly recommended you set up a Traveler Card to be able to have the system track your points throughout the season (if you only want to do this one-off, there is a way to use just an e-mail account, but your points will not accumulate).
Plan out a team of the 6 Pokemon you want to use during the Tournament.
Go to the rsvp link sent out by the organizers and pre-register your team of 6. You'll be able to make changes up until the Tournament code is generated.
Show up a little early to the event for any check in. Go to silph.gg and log in with your Traveler Card (or an e-mail if you don't have/want a Card) the code the organizer gives you. Enter the POkemon and CPs for your team of 6 (if you didn't pre-register earlier).
Once the tournament starts, the system matches you with a random player. Find that player and have a best 2 of 3 Great league match with Pokemon from your announced team of 6.
Once you agree on a winner, go back to silph.gg and both players enter the result.
When all players complete their battles, the next round will be generated by the system
Play until all rounds are completed
A lot of these tournaments have been in the weekend/evening/etc.; what if I can't make any of the event times but still want to do competitive PvP?
Distance tournaments are discouraged (because of difficulties--- you have to build up ultrafriends with everyone, timing of matches, review of disputes, etc.), but are allowed. There is a discord that helps match players with a group, they build up to Ultra friends, then play tournaments. For more information, check in the Hawaii discord.
My community is far from 4 stops/on an outer island/etc., but we have a group of at least 8 who want to set up our own tournaments. Is this possible?
Yes! Reach out in the discord (above).
