This is an ongoing project. Information and pictures are constantly being updated.
This research examines informal taxi stops in Tshwane and how they could be improved as places to wait, work, and travel. The people who use, run, and live near these stops are the experts on what is needed. Once formal data collection begins later in 2026, several different groups will be invited to share their experiences and ideas. In the meantime, there are ways to engage with the project now.
When the questionnaires open, the research will hear from:
Taxi drivers and marshals who work at informal taxi stops
Passengers and regular commuters who use minibus taxis
Vendors and small businesses operating at or near taxi stops
Residents of communities near the study sites
High school learners who travel by taxi (engaged through their schools)
Design students from partner tertiary institutions
Members of the general public who interact with informal taxi stops in any way — as fellow road users, observers, or interested community members
If you belong to any of these groups, your participation will help shape research findings and design proposals that respond to what matters most to the people who use these spaces.
Once the formal phase opens, a single online questionnaire will be available through a QR code displayed at study sites, in vehicles, on posters at universities and community spaces, and through this website. The questionnaire begins with a few short questions to confirm consent and identify your role, and then asks questions tailored to your relationship to informal taxi stops. You can choose how much you want to share, and your responses are anonymous.
Paper versions of the questionnaire will also be available for passengers (distributed by participating taxi drivers) and for high school learners (through their schools with parental consent). This ensures that participation is open to people who do not use online forms or whose circumstances make paper completion easier.
If you would like to be notified when the questionnaires become available, please send a short email to the researcher mentioning which group you belong to. You will be added to a list of people contacted directly when the questionnaires open in late 2026.
Get in touch directly through the Contact page.
If you have questions about the project, would like to share your perspective informally, would like to discuss possible collaboration, or represent an organisation that might be relevant to the research, please get in touch directly through the Contact page.
The questionnaires will open in late 2026, once ethical approval has been obtained from the relevant institutional review bodies. Ethics approval ensures that the research is conducted responsibly and that participants are protected. This page will be updated when the questionnaires become available.
