Lab News

2024/04/17

Rio presented her newest discoveries on how the host and fungi co-evolve to achieve commensalism through genome instability. This is a brand new territory for our lab to explore in the next few years.

Ground-breaking and nice talk. Good Job, Rio.

2024/03/18

Today we said goodby to Becky, since this is her very last week being a research technician in our lab. THANK YOU so much for all the work keeping the lab tidy and nice while contributing to our research funded by the Gilead Scholar Program. We wish you have a great time in Megan's group in the next months.

Meanwhile, we are also welcome her to join us as a PhD student next year. Congratulations for being awarded BBSRC-MIBTP PhD Studentship.

Rio talked about the importance of studying fungal genome dynamics and how fungi adapt to the host stress through aneuploidy.

Great talk!

2023/12/08

An early Merry Christmas for everyone!
Thank you all for being amazing this year. Wish you all have a restful holiday time, after the busy 2023.

Ala gave a fantastic presentation on her development of a proteogenomics platform for fungal antigens in the IMI forum. Great science for the full room of people.

Good job!

2023/9/04

Becky presented her work on how aneuploidy contributes to the evolution of antifungal resistance. Her talk was fantastic, and we are SO proud of her. THANK YOU, Becky for being awesome.

The Tsai Lab has arrived at Manchester for the 2023 British Society of Medical Mycology meeting! We are ready for the exciting sciences in mycology and meeting with the lovely UK fungal community!

2023/6

Congratulations to Abi and Saba won the summer studentships from The Genetics Society and The British Mycological Society for their summer projects.

Abi is going to monitor the mutational evolution of Candida albicans under fluconazole treatments; Saba is working on how host macrophages recognize fungi with ongoing genome instability.

2023/05/25

Today we celebrate Ella and Harry's achievements in the past seven months. Congratulations for finishing their MSci project. We are so proud of you and will miss you a lot.

2023/04/20

Hung-Ji is giving a talk in the MicroSoc 2023 meeting on antifungal resistance. He talked about secretome and sub-population evolution!

Pokemon vs aneuploidy is a hit!

2023/02/23

Team HAPI lab won the 2nd place of BioSoc Quiz. Good job!

2023/02/02

This week is the THREE years old birthday of our lab. It is still surreal to me, while nothing really went as what I expected. However, I am grateful where I am and who I am now.

2023/01/09

Welcome back - Alicja and Rio. Our official first PhD students in the Tsai lab. Alicja's PhD work will be supported by AMS, and Rio is funded by BBSRC-MIBTP studentship. Also welcome Rebecca joining the lab for our Gilead project.

We are so excited to have you around working together.

2022/10/06

Congratulations to Alicja finishing her MRes VIVA today!  We are very proud of your achievements!

2022/10/03

Welcome Harry Thorne and Ella Pointer joining us today for their MSci projects!

2022/09/05

We attended 2022 British Society of Medical Mycology meeting at Exeter (4-6th Sept). This is our first in-person conference ever. Had a lot of fun in science and making new friends/collaborations.

2022/07/15

Today we are saying farewell to Fiona and Alex. Congratulations for their MSci degree and all the accomplishments in the School. You two will be missed!

Gabi's first day

2022/07/11

Congratulations to Gabi winning the Steven Beach "Be Better" Award to start an interesting summer project on mutational tolerance in aneuploidy. Today is her first day in the lab.

2022/03/15

Big congratulations to our very own Alex and Rio for receiving MITBTP PhD studentship!
Alex will be joining Kettles lab on plant-fungus interactions. Rio will be studying host-induced stress responses in C. albicans in our group as our first ever PhD student!

2022/03/01

Tsai lab received a two-year AMS Springboard award (will start in July). We are the only group awarded at the University of Birmingham.  In this project, we will tackle the pleiotropic impacts of aneuploidy in antifungal tolerance and resistance.

2022/01/27

The Tsai lab is TWO year old today. Although our first 1.5 year was hampered by the pandemic, we obviously made good progress in the second-half of our second year. The TSAI lab now functions as a research group with masters student and technicians. This year, we hope to make more progress to achieve our research goals and enjoy every moment in the lab! To kick-start the new year, we got an espresso machine today to fuel our lab members!

2021/11/29

Welcome Dr Harlene Ghuman joining us today!

2021/10/01

Tsai lab is awarded a two-year grant to investigate antifungal resistance in the context of host-pathogen interactions.
