I believe that students learn best when they are given opportunities to use their newfound knowledge and skills. By including demonstrations and in class activities, students explore how the course content relates to their own lives. Assignments that require the student to take the learning outside of the class room furthers this integration.
In addition, I believe that psychology is an important field for many students, including those who are non-psychology majors. By designing introduction level classes that are accessible to students in many disciplines, the students in the class, the university, as well as the field of psychology are bettered. In order to best create opportunities for many students, tests and exams are important, but more important for qualifying whether basic benchmarks have been met. It is in other assignments that students have the chance to determine how engaged they want to be with the materials.
I utilize best practices in Universal Design for Learning. This entails creating materials and courses that can readily be used by the widest possible range of users and students (http://www.udlcenter.org/sites/udlcenter.org/files/UDLinPostsecondary.pdf).
