While in language school in Quetzaltenango, I had two different Popti teachers. Popti is an ancient and somewhat difficult-to-learn Mayan language, which is widely spoken in the city where we are now living, and even more dominant in the surrounding villages. My first teacher was so excited when I introduced him to the New Testament in his native language. I decided that learning some Bible vocabulary in Popti would be helpful. Little did I know that he would grow to love the Word of God! On a regular basis, he began to ask me if we were going to get to read the Bible again in class, and would say that it was such a new and exciting experience for him. Later, he shared with me that I was not the only one who had learned something, but that he also had learned about the Word, and had developed a true friendship with me and Becky, that he would always treasure. He also said that his mother has cancer, but that he is not worried anymore, that he prays and now has a much stronger faith in God than ever before. And on top of that, he said he had forgiven his father and himself for some things, and that he now has a good relationship with his father! That made the hard language learning sessions worth it all to hear him say those words! My second teacher also was very excited to be introduced to the New Testament in Popti as well. His response was very similar. He told me that I explained the Bible very well, and that he knew absolutely nothing about the Bible! It confirmed that Becky and I were in the right place doing the right thing, just being ourselves and sharing our lives, the Word, and our testimonies with whoever we happen to be getting to know at the time. The hunger is there. The lack of knowledge is there, and the desire on our part is there! Becky, likewise, had a wonderful time studying Spanish with her teachers. In her classes, she also used Bible stories and shared her faith during the classes, which helped her teachers to gain a greater understanding of the Scriptures. It is so interesting to us to see how religion permeates society here, but an actual understanding of the Bible is a very rare phenomenon.
